I drink an appalling amount of Diet Coke, and there's this little blurby thing on the cans that reads:
"Phenylketoniurics: Contains Phenylalanine"
So I finally looked that up on Wikipedia, and here's what I'm drinking:
"Phenylalanine (abbreviated as Phe or F)1 is an α-amino acid with the formula HO2CCH(NH2)CH2C6H5, which is found naturally in the breast milk of mammals and manufactured for food and drink products and are also sold as nutritional supplements for their reputed analgesic and antidepressant effects. Phenylalanine is structurally closely related to dopamine, epinepherine (adrenaline) and tyrosine."
But even that hasn't stopped me from getting my fix!

Lest your panic spiral out of control, maybe it will help to know that phenylalanine is a very common amino acid. Amino acids make up proteins. So if you eat protein, especially if your diet contains a fair amount of meat and dairy products, you were getting lots of phenylalanine anyway.
Aspartame is a non-nutritive sweetener made up of two amino acids, of which one is phenylalanine. Aspartame happens to be very, very sweet, so it doesn't take much to make your soda taste the way you like. I can't tell you the exact amount of phenylalanine in other foods, but I think it's safe to say that you're not adding a lot more with your diet soda habit.
Unless you drink gallons and gallons every day. But even then, I'd feel more sorry for your kidneys (from the sodium) and tooth enamel (from the phosphoric acid).
ETA: Have you considered that maybe it's the caffeine that you're addicted to?

Hey! Maybe this explains the cheese thing. Oh, and the fact that it tastes soooo gooooood.
(Sorry, I'm clearly easily distracted. By cheese :-D)
