I am one of the 8 Pratt Students working to help establish second levels. Please check out the blog that we are keeping to document our process at http://classifyme.blogspot.com/. I have been drawing from a number of resources to help figure out the performing arts levels. I began looking at the BISAC categories and found a good start there. I checked out DDC and LC and didn't quite see the specificity I was looking for. I also looked the NYPL Performing Arts Library for inspiration. I couldn't resist going past the second levels thinking that in libraries with specialized performing arts collections the additional levels might be useful.
My categories are in a draft phase. I wanted to give them to the group to review and discuss. I anticipate plenty of changes and encourage questions and comments on ways to improve the quality of the categories. Please take a look and fire away (gently -- I am new at this)!

Animation is not a performing art. At most, the voice actors could be said to be performing, and that's a relatively small part of an entire animated production. In every bookstore and library I've been in, the books on animation are near the books on drawing.

Excellent points. Animation would be much better suited under the category of art. Animation has seen evolution from traditional hand drawn work to the digital/CGI work we are seeing more and more of today. Music is still a top level category. The performance aspect got the wheels turning for me and I neglected to go back to the top levels. Music does branch out and cover all performance aspects.
So taking all that into consideration, the levels have been re-adjusted.

"Film & Television" is a separate top level category. I think animation should be in there by the way.

I think there is a case to be made for putting animation in film & television. I scanned the list again and have also decided that screenwriting and radio would be better suited elsewhere.

I'm wondering about musical theater and opera, and whether they belong here or in Music or both. My instinct says both (at least for musical theater, not so sure about opera), but is that potentially confusing?
