If anything, he (or his wife) seems to be destroying them. What were the reasons for electing this man again?

Don't be silly. Relations with US vassal states aren't "international". They just have to be kept in their place.

The column in question is by a guy who says - against all the evidence of Obama's meteoric rise - that "I discovered that Obama's judgment is pretty dreadful".
So his assessment doesn't seem like it needs to be taken very seriously.

Just to add insult to injury:
Yo, Brown!
In return for a pen holder carved from the timbers of the sister ship of the one the White House desk is made from and a first edition of a seven-volume biography of Winston Churchill, the Mail is appalled that "Barack Obama, the leader of the world's richest country" gave Brown a box set of 25 DVDs selected by the American Film Institute. These include Raging Bull, Casablanca, Psycho and The Graduate. It is, the Mail says, "a gift about as exciting as a pair of socks".
Yo, Brown!

Oh come on boys, if they ever saw this, both Obama and Brown will have their laugh. Codyed, is it true, are all republicans spoilt children, only interested in their own cash flow? (where I live people think so.
We still are so glad that they are out of office in the USA. What terrible things they have done to your country and the middle east. Unforgivable. Yes, truly unforgivable).
Penholders, DVD's! Hallelujah!

17,000 more troops to Afghanistan and an indefinite stay in Iraq.
Hallelujah!
And did I mention that Obama will be preserving renditions as a counter-terrorism tool?

Inheritance!
Edit: if you are a believer you should be thanking God on your bare knees that their are persons who feel responsible for the havoc your champions have brought on your land and the middle east!
But you won't. As republican Americans do: don't give a damn, as we witnessed.
Go on weeping & sleeping & waiting for the resurrection of your version of the American dream, our nightmare. I myself will never forget the waving Obama's and Biden's when the helicopter took off. Oh yes, when I am a demented old person I'll stil remember that image. Codyed, you have really no idea. Not a beginning of an idea.

Apples and oranges, here. Or apples and cactus fruit. Have you ever had prickly spines in your tongue? I've been careless enough to do so and I don't recommend it.
Trying to say: the media talk about the Churchill bust is obviously fluff, and no one should give a rat's cerebrum. But the work-in-progress about renditions and torture is worth anybody's and everybody's attention.
So far, I have the impression that the Republicans don't want to go there, since their hands are so dirty. While the Democrats have largely let it slide, since they feel they have more urgent issues on their agenda. Including, along with some worthwhile considerations, funneling cash to fat cats without transparency.
To my dismay, there seems to be a fair amount of continuity between the Bush and Obama administrations.

Regarding presents, there is a LONG history of US presidents giving silly, cheap gifts.
