This was a fiction book I read in junior high. The main characters were a girl from new york and a boy who was a prince of some sort.
The both had a rare condition that would make them fall asleep randomly and when they did they would be riding the others thoughts. When one of them was asleep they would have duel brain waves. The boy's country is a german speaking one but he learns english because of the girl and vice versa. At one point the prince visits New York and they meet for the first time.
Later in the story the Prince is kidnapped and the girl has to convince the Prince's body guard she knows where he is and help rescue him.

Up until you mentioned the prince angle, I thought this might be Jaguar by Bill Ransom, but that's a travel-between-worlds book, the kids know each other in waking life, and neither is rich or royal, far from it. They were considered to have a sleep disorder, though.
