YA Fiction: Young Witch in training.

You guys are great and seem to enjoy a challenge. This book i read way back in the eight grade about a young female magic user, i have very little memory about it, only that it was entertaining.

ONLY DETAIL I REMEMBER: Supporting character named xiiiiii, pronounced shhhhh. I believe he was a magic familiar to the girl.

Someone asked about this a little while ago and I did a google search... mind you I haven't actually read it, but the book The Other Ones by Jean Thesman came back and looked like it might fit. The other poster never said if it was correct though.
