YA Held Hostage in Endless Stairs

Fiction, read in early 1980s but book may have been even older than that. I read as a teen and think it may have been considered YA teen. Basic plot, someone held against his will in a room that had stairs going every which way, but all seemed to eventually lead back to starting location. Basic bland food left out, thinking something about a puck shaped item of food. Sorry, memory fuzzy on this.
