Does anyone have (or know where to obtain) a complete list of all VMCs that have been published to date? The current Virago site is not complete; it may be that it does not include books that are now out of print. For example, when I looked up Mary Webb, the current site listed only three titles, but I know that there have been at least 2-3 other VMC titles of hers (I've read them!). Thanks in advance!

Our lovely Christina (Christiguc) has just such a list. At least that's where I got mine. I cannot figure out from her profile how to download it, but someone will be along shortly who will know how.

Christina set up a list on the Wiki.

I think there was also one in googledocs, but IIRC you to have/set up a google account to access it.

>8 rbhardy3rd:: I think there was also one in googledocs, but IIRC you to have/set up a google account to access it. Correct. Here's the thread which includes a link to the spreadsheet. If you'd like to use it to track your own collection, you can save a copy in GoogleDocs or export to Excel.

Thanks Laura! I had misplaced the link.

(and thanks again for setting it up in the first place)

Thanks very much to all of you! The list and spreadsheet are exactly what I was looking for! (Extra thanks to Christina and Laura for setting them up -- they're so helpful!)

I also had one, which I e-mailed to Belva a few days ago, upon her request. It is available, should it ever be needed (although I doubt it, considering Christina's excellent one).

There's also Louise's helpful blog version of the list:

Thanks for the link Rob. That is precisely what I need - a dedicated book case, or two or three for my Virago collection.

Paola;
Yes indeed. And I am so appreciative. As my kids would say: You're the *hit!~!
Thank you again.
You know, I am 61 years of age (getting close to 62). Some might say that is too old to begin collecting something fresh and new, but I am so excited by the searching and finding of these very special books. Now, I just need to interest one of my daughters or granddaughters in them so that I have someone to take them off hubby's hands when I leave this old world.
I have my Virago Modern Classics and Persephone Classics book shelf right behind my computer so all I have to do is turn around and there the lovelies are. Of course, I haven't many as of yet. But there is time.
I am just sorry that it is so difficult to find them this side of the pond and I haven't found any with the green covers as of yet. Waaa!~!

And a quick question:
I have noted that Jane Austen among others have some of our "classics". Do you ladies count other publisher's copies of the volume or not. I am thinking not, but wanted to ask anyway.
Thank you,
belva

> 10 - Belva - that is a completely outrageous idea that you are too old to start collecting at 61 -dismiss it immediately!! I hope your daughters and g/daughters are inspired by your enthusiasm for VMCs:-))

Have you checked out the Top 10 Watch List thread and posted a list of your Most Wanted?

10> Belva, I'm only a year behind you, and I just started collecting VMCs not quite a year ago. It has given me a lot of pleasure; I've never really been a collector of anything before (well, not since Beatles bubble gum cards!). As I've mentioned before, a large number of my books came from a generous woman I met on one of the swap sites. The only condition she set was that I give them to the university Women's Center when I'm ready to pass them on.

Personally, I don't count non-VMC editions as part of my collection.

I'm not really a collector, either, and started about the same time as Deborah. I've really enjoyed finding the books, and yes ... reading them, too! I also have a special bookcase but I need to clear another shelf because my collection is expanding.

I don't count non-VMCs either.

Belva

I collect Virago authors as well as Virago books. In this way I can buy reading copies while I look for the real thing. When I make a mental list of my collection I separate the real Viragos from the others, but if I waited for the green copies I would be wasting valuable reading time. Also - of my two copies of Cassandra at the Wedding and Lady Oracle for instance, the non-Virago is a beautiful book and the Virago beat up and old.

Belva, YOU ARE NOT TOO OLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I don't think Virago lovers have to be a certain age (older or younger than). I am soon to be 53, I found my first Virago when I came to live in this country (1985), and I did not start collecting them seriously until about a decade ago. I agree with you, it is not easy to find many on this side of the pond, and the ones I find are pretty much always the same. However, I get them anyway, because I know that, in our great group, there will always be someone who does not have them!

Slightly off topic but does anybody know how many Viragos have cover art by Gustav Klimt? So far I have Olivia by Olivia and Love by Elizabeth Von Arnim and know of My Mortal Enemy by Willa Cather but are there any more? I tried googling it but couldn't find any information.

I don't, bunnyb, but that puts me in mind of another question. I noticed a copy of a Violet Trefusis novel today (to my embarassment, I can't remember which) in a Dial Press edition that had the same cover picture ("Supper" by somebody ---- my feet hurt too much for me to walk to the other room to find out) as my green Penguin copy of The Matriarch. I was wondering how often this happened. Then I was wondering whether anybody has any interest in developing a list of the cover art, arranged alpha by artist. I could start a spreadsheet in July if enough people think it worth the time and effort.

There was a post on the Virago Forum recently from an Irish student who indicated she was doing her MA on Virago cover art. I don't know how far along the path she has progressed. The forum can be found through a link with the Virago home page.

#17> Lizzie, I believe the book you are talking about is Hunt the Slipper by Violet Trefusis.

Thank you both..... Hunt the Slipper is the right book, and I'll check out the Virago forum.
