Philip Weiss: Obama's Cairo speech offers to relegitimize Israel
Phil Weiss is a Jew too, just in case you're curious.

And by describing the pain of dislocation 61 years ago, he had referred to the Nakba; and placed it in the context of the Holocaust—in Charles Krauthammer’s pinched view, an unforgiveable act of “moral equivalence,” when there is no equivalent to the Holocaust, and of course never can be, because Jews are so exceptional. Obama had shared pity with the Palestinians, at long last.
In a dozen interviews I did on the “Arab street,” people told me that Obama had spoken fairly. They did not begrudge his emphatic embrace of Israel. They have been living with the fact of Israel for 60 years as a militant neighbor that oppresses a minority. “He is the only hope we have,” a student said. The Egyptians I met were more anxious than either the neocons or the anti-Zionists in the States to get past the ancient narrative of grievances. Think of it: for Krauthammer and myself, this battle is an intellectual feast and a raison d’etre. It makes careers. For an Arab in Egypt the battle shadows his life and keeps the entire Arab world from taking a step forward.

Yeah, Krauthammer's the guy that admits that FoxNoise not only provided an alternative to the MSM, but they created an alternative reality, too.

Guess what--I just learned William Kristol is Jewish! Oh man. That might explain a lot.
I bet he eats Kosher, for example.

Cody, William Kristol is entitled to his point of view, Jewish or not.
Saying things like William Kristol is Jewish ... that explains a lot, is just bait for people like Oakes and adds nothing to the complex issues associated with our relationship to the Middle East and Israel. So what if he's Jewish. The only thing that means for certain is that he's circumcised. Beyond that it means nothing useful. There's a difference between differing with Israeli policy and differing with Israel because they are Jewish. It is most important to know the difference.

Geneg, how do you know that William Kristol is circumsized? I am hoping that this is strictly a cultural assumption on your part.

Couldn't we say, be warned: Krauthammer is a very strident neocon? Krauthammer's analysis of Obama's speech doesn't seem to match the words.

I don't think you can call Krauthammer a neocon. Conservative, yes, but his views predate the neocon movement by many years.

What does match the words is what Bush Jr. has talked about on the same topic in the past. Krauthammer probably meant to say "I'm afraid the black dude might mean it this time."

I have no idea whether my adventure today constitutes anti-Semitism or not. Maybe one or two of you, the more informed of the lot, can help me out here. I was at my local bookstore and, after some initial browsing, made my way to the information desk. I asked the guy whether they had a copy of Beyond Chutzpah by Norman Finkelstein in stock. The man behind the counter chuckled a bit. I looked behind him and there was Jewish employee typing away at his computer (he had a long beard and a yarmulke). It was the Jewish employee who was the most help since he wasn't distracted with mindless laughter. His quick fingers discovered that they did not have a copy of said book.
Nothing really happened beyond that. I continued to browse through the aisles and sip my cold drink. The Jewish employee continued to help customers. And that was that. But I can't help but wonder if I was acting subconsciously anti-Semitic, if there is such a thing.

I hugged a Catholic the other day. So I got to thinking--what if I hugged a Jew? Everyone loves hugs. Hugs are personal. Hugs are intimate. Hugs are a sincere expression of ones love and care for another. I don't just hug anybody. I hug people that are family or close friends. So a hug must absolutely mean something.
The only problem I have with this approach is getting close enough to my Jewish target in order to wrap my love embracing arms around him (or her). What if he or she resists, then my warm embrace could be construed as assault. God knows I don't need that given my current status as "hater of the tribe." Should I get to know the Jew first?
Oy vey. This is all becoming rather exhausting. Who knew atoning for one's base anti-Semitism would be such hard work?
Hallmark does not make a card for this. I checked.

#15: Figuring out how to hug a nonconsenting person is probably a lot like figuring out how to hug a porcupine. There are too many points against you.

> 15 Actually, some Muslim Americans on Muslim WakeUp! already did a Hug-a-Jew campaign a few years ago. Apparently it was a hit among both Jewish readers, Muslim readers and others, and was one of the most popular sections of the MuslimWakeup's apparently now-defunct Web site. But they didn't just go around ambushing unsuspecting Jews! ;) They became acquainted with the people and interviewed them.

Cody, given your experience with the nurse at the hospital ("I'll give you my number in case you get divorced,") I really do not recommend public hugging.
