Books about Wine

There is a regular magazine, "The Wine Spectator" which contain current reviews of wines around the world. This magazine had reviewed more than 1,000 brands of wines in the past issues. Happy Wine Drinking. :-)

Penny, one of the best books is:

Hugh Johnson, Vintage: The Story of Wine

It's a well-written history of wine and wine-making around the world, from ancient Armenia 5,000 years ago down to the 1980's.

(You already have some great ones in your library. Kermit Lynch is excellent.)

Thank you all so much for the great suggestions. I'm very impressed by how many books about wine are in Nemoman's library - whoa! It'll take me a while to catch up.

I enjoy drinking wine, but I am also fascinated by the people who grow and harvest the grapes and sell the wine. They are passionate, quirky, full of energy. And the European vineyards have such a long history.

My initial post appears rather flip in that I did not give you a recommendation. Based on the books we share I think you would enjoy Angel's Visits: An Inquiry Into the Mystery Of Zinfandel by David Darlington - it may have been retitled Zinfandel. All of Darlington's books are wonderful.

Thank you for the specific suggestion. I had already noted a good dozen books on your list that were of interest - including that one. I do, however, rely on the public library for most of my books as I read far too many to buy them all. And, unfortunately, they don't have a copy of (Angel's Visits). I'll have to look for it in second-hand bookstores.

One book that I enjoyed recently was (To Cork or Not to Cork) by ((George Taber)). He presents the historical evolutions of bottle closures but also presents some of the personalities behind each option.

Another thing, besides reading, that you can do is to visit wineries. It's one of my favorite ways to spend a vacation. If you avoid the biggies and stick to the smaller vintners (you know, the ones who know they're farmers), you'll usually have a great experience. Great folks generally and full of information and anecdotes about making wine.

I recommend Paso Robles California, Salinas/Monterey California and Dundee/Willamette/Chehalem Oregon regions if you're in the US. There are some favorites there. : ) I'm having one from Monterey right now. If anyone wants suggestions, let me know.

Too funny...

I try not to pay attention to tasting notes for that very reason, clam. When in tasting rooms I come up with some pretty strange elements though and I've been told I'm a 'super taster' which I think is funny since I don't have a cape.

I have about 90 wine books on LT and you are welcome to browse them.
