I'm working with the remaining books to be read for my 999 challenge. Here goes:
1.Gentlemen and Players by Joanne Harris
connection = Humphrey Bogart
Gentlemen and Players has chess in it. Humphrey Bogart loved to play chess and he had a reputation as being both a gentleman and player. The next book is written by his son, Stephen Humphrey Bogart
2. The Remake: As Time Goes By by Stephen Humphrey Bogart
connection = Sam Spade
Stephen's father portrayed Sam Spade very famously in the movie The Maltese Falcon. Book#3 collects three short stories which continue Spade's story.
3. Nightmare Town by Dashiell Hammett
connection = hardboiled fiction
Hammett popularized the hardboiled style. This style was later further refined by Chandler.
Chandler once said that Hammett "gave murder back to the kind of people that commit it for reasons, not just to provide a corpse." (The Simple Act of Murder)
4. Raymond Chandler's Philip Marlowe:a centennial celebration by various contributors
connection = the name Philip
5. The Minority Report and other Classic Stories by Philip K. Dick
connection = Phil rhymes with Bill
6. A Walk in the Woods by Bill Bryson
