I read this in Middle school... hmm 84-85ish?

The first book had little to do with the dragons, it was about a boy .. I believe in the beginning he escapes from some dark fortress. Possibly by the end of his book he either meets his dragon or others like himself.

The people in the book each have a dragon they are linked to. They know the dragon is out there looking for them, and can feel when they die perhaps?

I remember one of the books they find a group of young dragons, I think one of them finds his rider but the others know they have to keep looking. They decide to stay together and I remember one of the girls telling a red dragon that he's a very pretty dragon, and he replies somewhere along the lines of she's a very pretty girl and they decide to stick together til they find their respective partners.

It was a Young Adult series as far as I remember... I did a bit of searching and found several books of lists of dragon books and none of them ring a bell.

It is definately NOT Eragon or Dragonriders of Pern series.

I kinda hesitate to say anything because I'm not basing it on much but Jane Yolen had a series of YA books about dragons The Pit Dragon series. Dragons Blood is one of them. Its been ages since I read them and I don't recall specifics anymore but I'm getting some faint bells ringing. Might be worth a look at any rate.

This made me think of the Pit Dragon series as well, but there are all sorts of things that don't line up. Most people don't have dragons and even fewer know about the sort of connection that the main character manages to create with his. Also, the dragons in those books can't be ridden, they're not shaped right for it.
