Change Something

Not new, but newly available: You can now change your own username or move books from one account to another. Collections persist and are moved as well, so you could move your wishlist account books all into a collection called Wishlist and expect them to be in the right place on the destination account.

Edit your profile and click the "change user name or password" link. Thanks to everyone who bravely tested with me, and as always let me know if you see anything weird.

I moved books from my other libraries (fiveforsilver and staticontheline) to my main one (this one). It seems to have worked, however, both the other libraries still show that they have books in the profile but not in the library.

Also, it would be nice if there was some kind of message in the moved-to library (82 books have been moved from fiveforsilver to bluesalamanders, or something like that).

Edit: Also, I just realized I made a mistake because of that. I assumed at first that the books were copied and not moved and I deleted the books from staticontheline. Is there any way I can get those back?

The profile page will update pretty soon.
The books are moved, not copied, so I'm not sure how you'd delete them, did I miss something? You can export from your one library and re-import to another if you want copies in multiple accounts.

No, I just screwed up. I moved them to the wrong library and because of the profile thing, I thought they were still in the original library, so I deleted them all from the second one. Which I realized was a silly thing to do anyway, but by then it was too late.

Copying (rather than moving) selected books from one account to another might be useful as a workaround for *cough* those paranoid, private people *cough* who'd like to contribute reviews to the site without having to make their entire library public.

I think copying rather than moving might be a good idea, also for those of us who tend to make silly mistakes. It's easier to delete books later than to re-add them.

I possess anecdotal evidence that there is some overlap between the two populations.

I don't understand how re-importing in order to have copies in both accounts would work. If it's the same procedure, I mean.

Also, what information gets moved, except collections? Comments, private comments, reviews, tags, user-uploaded covers? What about dates - the entry date in particular?

Reviews are what I was most concerned about, honestly. I assume that most if not all data is moved, but it's not that simple with export/import, is it?

Importing: My point was that if you export your library, it doesn't go anywhere, you just downloaded a text copy of all your data, and you can stick it in a new account. Its a very different process than the move-books function on the changesomething page.

Uh, Luke, have you actually looked into library export/import? It isn't that simple. For one thing a lot of the data cannot be exported.

Right. But of course exporting-and-then-importing isn't as satisfactory as copying-instead-of-moving would be, because you don't get all the data (no reviews, I think), and as far as I can see it can only do an entire library at once.

Luke - should I contact Tim about restoring the data that I deleted?

11: Yes I have, thanks for asking. If you want to move books, that is one way to move books. It is not perfect, nor is it the same as this other feature, nor is it comprehensive, but if you want copies of books in multiple accounts then that is a way to do it. Maybe even the best available way for now.

I see on the work page a separate box with a pink Plus sign and it says Add to Wishlist. Does this also mean the different colored checks have been implemented too ?

20/21: I tested the button. It did a search on my default source, with wishlist selected on the checkboxes. However, the book ended up in "Your Library" on the right. :/

Something that I didn't really think about when merging my accounts: Anyone following your LibraryThing RSS feeds will be inundated with updates for a few days, depending on the size of the library, number of reviews, etc.

How I found out about it: A couple days after merging my accounts, one of my housemates commented that I must have a pretty cushy job that I can sit around and comment on LibraryThing all day. Now...I'll admit that I do visit LibraryThing regularly while at work, but I didn't really know what she was talking about. Turns out she was subscribed to my reviews feed and was getting around seven or eight review at a time for quite awhile after I merged my two accounts--making it appear that I wasn't actually doing anything at work but post reviews on LibraryThing.
