I am trying to decide if my copy of Vanity Fair is abridged or not. My copy is from the Spencer Press World's Greatest Literature set, circa 1936. There is no indication that it is abridged, but it only 604 pages, though fairly small print. Most of the modern printings are 700-1000+ pages. Anyone know this set?

Don't know for sure -- I'd think it would say 'abridged' somewhere in the publishing info though.

My copy is a cheap Wordsworth Classic edition and it runs to 650 pages (694 pages if you include the notes) and on the front cover it says complete and unabridged. There are 67 chapters plus notes and an introduction in my copy. It is also in a tiny font. If you can't find the words 'abridged' anywhere my guess is that your copy is the real mccoy.

thanks-- I'll go with it then (assuming we read Vanity Fair-- last I looked it was in a dead tie with Brothers Karamazov).

I hope you enjoy Vanity Fair. It is one of my favourite books, it was the first one I'd encountered where the heroine cheats, lies and steals her way through life. I won't be rereading it, but I will follow the discussion.
