Post-Apocalyptic Novel From '80's

Looking for a book for a friend. He thinks it's from the '80's, though doesn't recall all that much about it.

Basic premise of the book - Centers around a small California townpost-nuclear war and their efforts to build a "knowledge shelter" for all of their books.

Any thoughts?

Sounds like A Canticle for Leibowitz.

I don't think that's what he was looking for... Then again, I'm not sure. ACFL was far future enough that the it wasn't CA specific, no? Though I do have a copy of it around that I could look at if need be. The general trope isn't necessarily new. Anathem and "Nightfall" both deal with societies' efforts to preserve knowledge in the face of cataclysm.

Knowledge shelter for books, post-nuclear, makes it sound very much like A Gift Upon the Shore by M. K. Wren. Published in 1990.

Two women, post-nuclear, build an underground shelter for all the books they can locate, for posterity. They encounter a religious, anti-knowledge group; conflict ensues between the need to preserve the species biologically and the need to preserve the species intellectually.

I'll pass that on and see if it's what he was thinking of. Thanks.

Also, A Gift Upon the Shore was definitely California or Pacific Northwest, small town, and it was near-future not far-future.

There was a good bit of detail about the book preservation. They wrapped them in cellophane and /or aluminum foil, individually, and their book cavern was reinforced, and at least partly underground ....
