Nov 21, 2009, 2:41 pm

I'm attempting to do everything at once, as per usual. This currently involves catching up here, attempting to start a thread filling you all in on the trip, uploading pictures (some of the picture files are corrupt somehow, but my new flatmate is helping me recover all the others), tidying my room (my version of unpacking has so far involved tipping everything from my backpack onto my bed/the floor and then rummaging through the souvenirs/gifts and leaving all their wrappers everywhere too), doing laundry, and trying to get my head around the fact that it is NOT 3.40 tomorrow morning. So.....yeah....

#17 lefty:
No. I just bought these two books last night. Harry Potter Should Have Died looks really interesting, though. I read their previous book, Mugglenet.com's What Will Happen in Harry Potter 7? If it's anything like that one, it should be really good. They had some really interesting ideas. I think I remember a lot of us reading that one before DH was published. :)

My daughter was supposed to take a train to visit her *grimace with shiver* boyfriend but she missed her train. Friday night she used her *impossible to say no to* face and asked if I could drive her (4.5 hrs). Couldn't say no, so we drove up Saturday morning. I´ve been gimping around since yesterday, because I slipped off my car and fell tibula first on a rock.. whaaaaaaa. It was honestly hilarious, but also extremely painful and I don´t even have a cool bruise to show for it all. I don´t bruise. Ever.

I´ll try to post pics later from my really, really cool white water and rock climbing adventure. you have to swim through these really cool rock formations and caverns and rivers and climb waterfall and jump off cliffs and slide down these natural rock slides. It´s sad because I survived all that, and only hurt myself getting back in the Jeep. sigh. trust me to go clumsy at the end of the day.

Hope you're feeling better soon!

My family teased and watched me jumping all over the house eager to race out the door tonight because I'd forgotten to get the HBP dvd. I'm about to search the different HBP dvds that are available online. I'm not sure which to get. Target had a 2-disc, and WalMart a 1-disc with a Marauder's map, but I think I remember liking one on Amazon better.

216LadyN
Dec 21, 2009, 4:58 am

#215 - I'm sorry, Veta. I know how difficult it is - my grandma was the same. She didn't know who I was the last time I saw her, as I'd changed my hair colour. You could see she didn't want to admit it though. In the end we sat down with old photographs and pointed out me, and other members of our family, using names frequently until it sunk in a bit with her.

217pollysmith
Dec 21, 2009, 7:44 am

Jim's Grandma is that way, right now. People she sees frequently she can remember, and she remembers Jim since he was her favorite grandkid. Me she's known for twelve years, and everytime I go in to visit she smiles and talks to me but as soon as I leave the room for a minute she asks who I am. " and They say, "Thats Jimmy's wife!" She always says in surprise, "Jimmy got married?" I don't mind I know she can't help it and I know she is really loves me for making her Jimmy happy.

Veta, when I was a teenager, my family dealt with my great-grandmother's Alzheimer's. My mother tried to help out by taking in my great-grandmother to give my grandma a break. Nanny never recognized me, even as her great-granddaughter. She thought I was the maid or a waitress. It can be so stressful and frustrating for everyone, but try to remember that this is the disease, not the person. {{{hugs}}}

222/223 - There are elements of commedia in panto, however, many of pantos routes are in the medieval mystery plays. Traditions of staging, such as stage left being the realm of the Good and stage right being the realm of the Bad echo the positions of heaven and hell in the mystery plays. Of course, panto is a result of theatrical evolution, so does have many influences. Most obviously the permission (or not) for women to appear legitimately on stage, hence the "Principal Boy" role and of course the Dame. I could go on, but it would be dull. :-)

231biblioholic29
Edited: Dec 22, 2009, 10:55 am

Actually, stage right is for Goodies and stage left is for Baddies. I'm the good fairy this year and I'm on from the right. I've always been a baddie in the past, so it's weird to be coming in from that side. :)

(I double checked this on Wikipedia, just in case we had somehow "Americanized" it, but we're doing it right. Dad, you should check out the wiki entry on pantomime, there's a small section on American companies doing it. I'm going to attempt to add us.)

This wasn't right-right now, but continuously today Slinky has let me pet her and give her real head rubs as though she were any of the other cats. There has been a lot of purring, a first for this poor cat who has been deprived of accepting love.

Sitting in shock because my friend just told me her hamster had more babies last night! The other babies are 18 days old, not weaned yet and I don't think they've even been picked up yet. :O!!! I read online a week ago that dwarf hamsters can get pregnant hours after giving birth and I thought about telling my friend to be warned. They didn't take out the male until I practically forced them to and it was already at least 8 hours later. But then I thought "No, that couldn't happen"

Wondering what we're going to do with all the hamsters. There are 8 babies from the last litter and I was planning on taking one or maybe two. Then we would have to find homes for the others. I think only 3 people are on the list...I sure hope there was only 5 babies this time...

I'm not sure pet stores will take them since there are a lot of hamsters. But we could always try. Or put posters around school about free hamsters. Some people will want them. We will definitely ask all the people in band and I'm sure the hamsters will get some homes from that.

It's done. Took over an hour, and I'm pretty crossed-eyed and dizzy from all the theological terminology used, but I used a bunch of red ink all over the 50 or so pages...I love the man, and he's better at this preaching thing than I would have thought at one time , but his gifts and talents DO NOT include writing. I just texted him, and explained to him that a really wonderful thing had been invented: it's called "the comma", and he might consider using it occasionally. He also has a tendency to meander in his writings, and so I cleaned up a lot of extra verbage.

While I am proofreading and editing his extremely important papers, he is in Arizona at the Fiesta Bowl. Good to know his priorities are in order--the papers are due on Jan. 15. lol

How clever! That was a brilliant idea.

Right now I'm trying to not be mad at someone who chased my sick cat into a corner shouting "Don't you dare be sick there!" Well, what did they think would happen if they chased the cat there?

Now I will be going to do some cleaning that I would have otherwise been able to clean on linoleum instead of carpet. (Sick cat 101: rush cat to linoleum. Is this TMI? I'm sorry!)

Wondering if anyone knows anything about a site called SwapTree? My son has an XBox 360 game from Christmas and we don't have an XBox, so we were thinking of trading it. My relatives didn't give a gift receipt or any clue what store it was from.

Does anyone know if this site is reliable?

#381: I've not heard of that site, but a lot of places will let you return without a receipt close enough to the holidays...though you might be past that by now. You can also usually get store credit or an exchange from a store so long as they carry that title...so you could go to GameStop to get another game or take it to Best Buy and get something else...

I'm taking a break from sewing -- I'm almost done with some comfy flannel shorts that I'm making for sleepwear. My most comfortable flannel pants experienced a terminal malfunction last week, ;-) so I need to make replacements. K, if you can get some plain white gloves, you can put something like vaseline or olive oil on your hands before bedtime and that might help. I don't have much trouble with allergies, so I always put some scented lotion on my hands before bedtime to fight the winter dry hands problem--added bonus of having the nice scent to help lull me to sleep.

ETA--if you have heat drying out the air in your house, it really helps a lot to run a humidifier during the winter. Mine puts at least a gallon of moisture into the air daily.

#406 Using a large pot, sweat some shallots and a clove of crushed garlic in butter -- do not allow to brown but saute until fragrant. Add a litre of white wine and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and add some fresh herbs (dill, parsley or whatever you like but lightly so that you don’t overpower the delicate flavour of the crab legs). Toss in your crab legs. Cover and allow to steam until cooked.
