A friend of mine is trying to find a book that he refers to as "fantasy by gaslight". Here is his description:

"I don't quite remember the plot except it had a city a lot like Paris threatened by living flame. The city was protected from the fey because it now had a solid ring of iron railroad tracks around it, although the body of a fey was discovered under the city and reanimated to attack our heroes. There was also a hedge witch."

Can anyone figure this one out?

Thanks!!

It doesn't ring a bell, but another synonym (more-or-less) for "fantasy by gaslight" is steampunk, so you might try searching on that tag.

This sounds like one of Martha Wells novels set in Ile-Rien - probably The Death of the Necromancer.

Well, it sounded more like Fantasy than Steampunk, but thanks for the hints - escpecially the Martha Wells book. I don't know the series, but it sounds good, and I'll be sure to forward this. :)

Thinking about it, it may be Element of Fire instead. It is more in keeping with the fire element, but set in a much earlier age than The Death of the Necromancer, so I don't think there are any railroads. It may be that the fey are kept out of Ile-Rien by the iron water plumbing instead(?)
I think there is a free version available on Martha Wells blog.
