Children's chapter book(s) about a red squirrel and friends

I read this book when I was around 8 years old. I don't recall the plot, but I think there was more than one book in a series with the same characters. Fiction, of course.

I would have read it around 1964.

I can't remember much else, but I think I would recognize the title and the main character's name if I saw them.

Could it be The Adventures of Chatterer the Red Squirrel, or another Thornton Burgess book?

Might it have been Perri, I think by Felix Salten- same author as the original Bambi? Not sure there was more than one book..

Thanks for the help. I'm pretty sure it's Chatterer, as the name Thornton Burgess jumped right off the page when I saw it.

I had a beginner reader version of "Perri" when I was little. As I recall, it had pictures from the Disney film loosely based on the book.

The Disney versions of Salten's books are VERY loosely based on the originals. To be fair, they have to be because of the difference between American and European wildlife. I borrowed Bambi from the local (Vienna) library, and was enthralled.
