I've asked this once before and could not find a response. Maybe it was just one of my crazy dreams
So it starts off with the main character in a car, and he sees this guy chasing a bowler hat almost get hit by other cars on the road. Then I think 2 wolves appear possibly maybe, I'm sure about the bowler hat part though.
Later on there's a girl he loves, but she's kinda promiscuous, and doesn't take notice of him, but they're best friends. Later on they have sex, but she still doesn't stay with him.
She ends up going to a weird building/factory where the secret society of bowler hat/wolves are turning depressed people that don't want to be humans anymore into animals. Then he has a flashback about how he came here as a kid, but for some reason can't remember it.
He gets a call that his mentally handicapped nephew ran away from the group home he was at. He goes searching for him and finds him in the woods, where there's a bunch of bones of dead birds. The kid explains how he reads these comics and how the creatures in them are real. Then a like a tear in dimensions happens and all the creatures from the comic come through, along with the creator of all creatures. Then I think the nephew dies or like a creature comes out of him.
He goes back to his house, starts looking for his alcohol, he keeps it in the house to test himself even though he's a reformed alcoholic. He finds it and realizes he's already drank it but he was blocking it from his mind. He grabs his shotgun. At some point I think a dog comes to the house, which is actually the girl he loved, turned into a dog by the bowler hat guys. She crawls in a crawl space under the house because she's hurt and going to die and that's what dogs do. He resigns to the fact that this is it and he'll die protecting her, and then the bowler hat people come and he shoots the hell out of everything. Then hey may have died, not sure, but it cuts to him and her and they're now swans, and how they're swans because once a swan mates it mates for life. Then I think it may have talked about how all people were really animals and the creator is king or something.

It sounds more like a dream! But if it turns out to be a book I want to read it to see how on earth any writer could do such a thing.

the book is "Keepers" by Gary A. Braunbeck. It's in my collection now ^_^ found it digging through all my old boxes at my mum's house.
