Does anyone have an interest in gathering this year? Last year's event in Philly was a real highlight for me personally.
6drneutron
Well, I think that's what Jill wanted to start discussing. My preference would be sometime in August, but depending on the weekend, July could work as well.
7jillmwo
Exactly, DrNewt! Just trying to get the discussion started to see if there was interest. At the moment, either June or July works for me, but we need to think about a gathering place/city as well.

One possible (sort-of out of the box) idea - meet in Baltimore the last week in September for the Baltimore Book Festival. The wife and I went last year and had a great time. Came home with an armload of books. Plus they have a Poe re-enacter reading his stories.

I'd love to try to make it sometime in July or August, we may we may even be able to schedule it around Georgia Dawn's East Coast drive?
Still, I'll always be a maybe, so plan it for when it is best for you definites.

As always, Groo, we'd love to have you if you can manage it. And you are right, I'd love to have a chance to meet GeorgiaDawn in person.
Otherwise, DrNeutron, I would like to do a book festival.

I have to put my two cents in for the great Dr's idea. Of course, I live in Baltimore, so you know...

Here's the website for the Baltimore Book Festival: http://www.baltimorebookfestival.com/
They've still got the 2009 info up, so you can get an idea of what this year's festival will be like by looking at last year's events. The dates are September 24-26, 2010. My preference is Saturday, Sept 25.
Just as an aside, the Festival is right beside the Walters Art Gallery, which has among other things, a nice collection of old manuscripts on display.
On the other hand, if we can work out something when Cindy and or Groo are close by, I'm up for that too!

It's worth mentioning that the Baltimore Book Festival is traditionally held in the same weekend as the National Book Festival (held in DC on Saturdays only), which could lead to some scheduling conflict.

I really like the Baltimore Book Festival suggestion for the selfish reason that I've been to DC a whole lot more than I've been to Baltimore. Plus I can get there pretty easily and the Poe inpersonator sounds great. The National Book Festival has lots of big names but lots of big lines, too. I prefer the Sunday, September 26th. But considering that my obligations have prevented me from attending the last two get-togethers despite my best intentions, I suggest you'all don't put too much weight on my preference. And thanks, jillmwo, for starting the discussion.
15drneutron
I'd do either DC or Baltimore. My preference is Baltimore - mostly for the easier crowds issue. But I'd love to do either
16psocoptera
Had a lot of fun last time. DC is closer for me, but I haven't been to Baltimore in a while (unless I-95 counts). I can do that weekend, but the two weekends before are off limits.
17cad_lib
Like Groo, I'd be interested, but always a maybe until others have settled a definitive date. It's the kind of thing I can do on a Saturday if The Wife is out of town. Since she commutes to South Carolina, my empty nest weekends are frequent, but not calculable real far in advance.
CAD in Philly.

I'd love to get together with everyone!
Rather do Baltimore than DC, or even a smaller town. Sept 25 sounds good.
I was just looking on Google to check out Baltimore, and I saw Frederick.
They have some interesting bookstores listed.
Wonder Book & Video, Ten Thousand Joys Bookstore, Book Nook Cafe
Is anyone familiar with Frederick, MD?

Only a little over a month away. Anyone still interested?

I'm planning to go to the Baltimore Book Fest on Saturday, Sept 25. We'll probably get there mid-morning. If anyone else is planning to go and would like to meet up, I'm sure we can pick a spot and a time.
22drneutron
One quick change...I just noted on the website that the advertised hours on Saturday are 12-8 pm. So we'll probably get there a bit before noon.
23WildMaggie
Any possibility of making it Sunday instead? For Saturday, I will have to do some serious re-scheduling. What's the majority preference?
24drneutron
We could probably do Sunday afternoon, but won't be able to get there quite at noon - I'd say 1 pm is doable if we assume we'll eat lunch there.
Anybody else interested? I'll also post in the 75 Books Challenge thread.

Thanks, Doc! Anyone else?

So, September 26, 1 pm at the Baltimore Book Festival. This is now just 3 weeks away. Who are we expecting and where are we meeting?
I've also posted in the Bookmooching group.

I'm actually heading to DC next weekend.I am attending a concert in Virginia with my son at an open air venue know n as Wolf Trap. I will only be there for a quick visit but I am looking forward to it.
28drneutron
Wolftrap's a great venue. We go there every year to see Garrison Keillor and A Prairie Home Companion on Memorial Day weekend. Always have a good time!

I agree. I am going to hear a full orchestra and chorus performing The Return of the King music while watching the movie at the same time. I can't wait.I hope the weather will be ok.

Looks like it might be just you and me. I talked the wife into double-dipping that weekend. We'll hit the National Book Fest in DC on Saturday and the Baltimore Book Fest on Sunday. Given our responsibilities at church, I don't think there's any way we can get there before 1:30. I'm not really interested in any particular talks, instead just wandering around and shopping at the various booths, so could meet any time.
32OldSarge
I am sorry but I won't be able to make it. I'm on a tight budget these days unfortunately and a trip is out of the question.
But please do get lost in the enjoyment of such an event for me. I'll be with you in spirit.

31> I also don't have any particular talk in mind and hope to just wander around and browse (can't afford to buy much) at the various booths. 1:30 is good for me, or you pick the time that's best for you.
Sorry to miss you, OldSarge. We couldn't talk you into driving down and back on Sunday to hold the cost down?

Paying the mortgage holds priority right now. My car needs work too and I don't want to drive it that far.
But I appreciate the thought.

35WildMaggie
Drneutron, you want to name a meeting spot and confirm a time?
36psocoptera
I still planned on coming to this. And I invited my mother, an LTer, but not a GD member (as far as I know).
37drneutron
Books and Books is at the south end at booth S27 on the map. I'll be there at 2 pm on Sunday, will be wearing a cap with the New Horizons spacecraft logo on it. You can check my profile to see what I look like. Looking forward to it!
38WildMaggie
Great, Psocoptera.
OK, then. 2pm rain (it may) or shine, at booth S27. If it rains, I may even be wearing the hat in my profile photo. I'll ask my son if he wants to come but don't know if he'll be there.
Looking forward to it.

The wife and I are trying to get over some colds, so if it's raining this afternoon, we'll probably bail this year. It depends on how much rain we're talking about, of course. If we do drop out, I'll try to leave a message on this thread.
Otherwise, I'll see you there!

Unfortunately, I am going to bail. What I thought, on Friday, was just bad allergies has turned out to be a sinus infection.
41WildMaggie
Sorry, Psocoptera, hope you recover quickly. Sorry to miss you.
Doc, I was planning to leave home about noon, as I'm coming farther than you, and will fish-or-cut around that time. Weather.com says rain will clear about the middle of the afternoon.

Well, I seem to still be at home. Weather uncertain, household unenthusiastic, fellow Green Dragoneers attendance up in the air, I guess I cut bait.
