How are the Sluggy Freelance books? I have not heard of them before.
12MikeBriggs
11> Sluggy Freelance is a webcomic that started back in, I think, 1998. Webcomic being a comic on the internet (world wide web), as opposed to a comic about spiders. Been a while since I heard/used that term/phrase: the web, the world wide web, instead of Internet or online. Though www is still up there in the address bar. Sluggy Freelance is a freelance web designer and he and his friend, an inventor of wacky things, have original stories and parodies of such things as Star Trek.
First heard about the comic from finding some Sluggy Freelance comics in an early John Ringo book. The strips included the characters doing things connected to the Legacy of the Aldenata series (and I think I recall some brief mentions of bun-bun in the book(s), the vicious bunny that lives with Sluggy).

So with the plethora of Buffy and Angel books out there do you have any tips on determining which are "good"? or are they all more or less equal?
50MikeBriggs
I've been reading season 8 for Buffy and Season 6 for Angel - continuations of the television series in graphic novel form. Until recently I had not read much in that form. Enjoyable enough continuations of the series, though rarely as absorbing as a good novel. If you decide to sample this continuation, I warn that the individual comic books can be something like 32 pages, but the story will abruptly end. Because of that, the very nature of the series in comic form, I would have to recommend reading them in order and cannot specifically point out one or another to read. The individual comics are written by numerous different authors, some by writers that worked on the television series (including Joss Whedon himself), and some by writers that normally work in the non-illustrated form. The individual comics shift in quality, and most are readable.
Comic/graphic novel is an interesting medium, though not always enjoyable. I have tried extending other series in the past, like George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire series (The Hedge Night, side series in comic form), Stephen King's Dark Tower Comics (the Gunslinger as a young man), and Jim Butcher's The Dresden Files Comics (one I read was a prequel, the others appear to be comics based on the books in the series. The Hedge Night (Martin) was an interesting dip back into a series that might never actually have another book published but I would not necessarily recommend it. I was only able to read one comic in the King's Dark Tower prequel series before I moved on. Butcher's prequel was the one that was good enough I decided to try the Buffy/Angel continuations.
The only other Buffy/Angel book I have read was a collection of comics from when the series was on the air. I have not attempted any of the young adult novels (I think I saw that they were young adult).

#59: King of Norway looks very good! I will see if I can find a copy.
62MikeBriggs
oh, heh. I was looking for book read 59 when I saw #59.
King of Norway is free inside Warriors at least through Nook. Sample of the anthology includes King of Norway, introduction and . . . maybe something else, though I do not recall now.
I included it, despite not including other short stories, as it is available on its own. Since I was thinking of the sample being different than the full length Warriors, since I do not have the full length Warriors.

74> I read it because of the TOLI challenge. I went down the list and read a description of every book. Then I got a free sample for the Nook, if available.
The Boneshaker book started off interesting enough. So I went ahead and bought it.
I enjoy Science Fiction, Alternative Fiction, Historical Fiction, Mystery, etc., but for some reason Steampunk (which can combine all four listed genre), has never really worked for me.

Just call me,
Curious (actually, Karen O.)

I used to take the rating out to more places, but I've slowly pulled back on it. There is a reason to the madness, though. To a certain extent it all came about because I was reading a historical fiction series by T. Soos. There was a long series of books in a row that ended up being rated roughly the same rating. but I knew one was slightly better than another and one was slightly worse. But not a full .1 better or worse, so I threw in .01s to organize the books.
Like above, 148-149 books. Both books were roughly 4.3 rated books, but I like to pinpoint it more exactly, and Die Like a Dog ended up .02 slightly higher rated than Day of the Moon. Because it was slightly better than Day of the Moon.
I used to have a more scientific method of determining the rating, but Librarything kind of killed my enjoyment in that. First the books can only be rated full stars and 1/2 stars on LT. from 1/2 to 5 stars. So everything from some determined number, 4.27 I think I picked as the low, up to, if I recall correctly, 4.64 ends up on LT as 4.5 stars (when you play, or set the stars). So now I just somewhat go by gut reaction. A quick "oh, that's a . . . . 4.37." Also, Tim, founder and leader of LT, discounts the stars. Figures they are less useful than they could have been. So they do not impact anything, except on the Zeitgeist there are highest rated books, and high/low authors. But the ratings do not impact recommendations, or the like.

Thanks for the explanation, Mike. It makes a lot of sense. Especially thinking of books in relation to other books.
I find myself using 3 or 4 stars A LOT. I should try to refine my rating system a little.
Thanks!

#101: My local library has that one, but not the first book in the series. Does The Way We Die Now stand alone well enough to be read on its own?
103MikeBriggs
It flows, somewhat, from the first. Recuperating from the first book. I do not think that you have to read the first book, though. I am trying to recall if the second book gives away any of the secrets of the first. I am not certain but I do not think anything is, though both the police officer Samson worked with in the first book, and Samson himself are "recuperating" in their own way from the first book.
I think it can stand well enough on its own. It is harder to tell when you read two books in the same series back to back. The stories somewhat merge in your mind.

Do you snack while you read? If so, favorite reading snack?
When I eat meals, breakfast, lunch, dinner, I read. I do not tend to eat snacks, though, while reading.
What is your favorite drink while reading?
I do not have a favorite reading drink.
Do you tend to mark your books as you read, or does the idea of writing in books horrify you?
The only time I write in a book, reluctantly at that, is a few times when I was asked to do so - to write down gift date and name, for example.
How do you keep your place while reading a book? Bookmark? Dog-ear? Laying the book flat open?
Scrap of paper, bookcover flap, page folded (rare and disliked). Any odd way I can without causing too much damage.
I do not have a formal "bookmark" though.
Fiction, non-fiction or Both?
I am not sure I understand the question. I read anything and everything. I tend to read more fiction than nonfiction.
Are you a person who tends to read to the end of a chapter, or can you stop anywhere?
I like breaking points, so I try for chapters. But if I have to break at some point other than chapter, I try for a natural breaking point, like new page, one of those double space breaks, etc.
Are you the type of person to throw a book across the room or on the floor if the author irritates you?
I have thrown one book. Several times.
If you come across an unfamiliar word, do you stop and look it up right away?
No. Most of the time I understand it in context.
What are you currently reading?
The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. It is a young adult book, but due to the violence, bloodshed, children killing children nature of the book, I would not necessarily recommend it to any young adults I know. Depending on what is meant by "young adult".
What is the last book you bought?
I do not believe there will ever be a last book. I will probably have books being sent to me, arriving after I am in my grave. Poor unread books. :(
Are you the type of person that reads one book at a time, or can you read more than one?
I tend to read one book at a time, though I have been known to read more than one at once. Technically there are something like 5 books listed as being currently read by me, but other than the Collins book, I haven't looked at any of them, other than the Kennedy book, in a real long time (and by looking at, I happened to notice the book on my shelf the other day).
Do you have a favorite time/place to read?
I read with each meal unless I am in a restaurant (unless it is lunch during work week, or something like a fast food place). I read while I commute to and from work. I rarely read outside of those times, which is how I tend to end up a lot more books read during the week than during the weekend.
Do you prefer series books or stand-alones?
I do not prefer one over the other. A big long series can hit me either as an opportunity for a long and happy reading experience, or hit me as an intimdating stack of books that would take a long time to wade through. Depending on my desire to read a specific book, and my interest level in a series on the subject.
Is there a specific book or author you find yourself recommending over and over?
There is not.
How do you organize your books? (by genre, title, author's last name etc)?
My to be read stacks have somewhat gotten away from me, though I still have a certain organization going on. Science Fiction, Westerns, Mystery, Legal Thriller (rare though I read), etc. are all, for the most part, on their own shelves.

152> It was an interesting look back to the forerunner of the Gothic novel. I found the style somewhat confusing, though. In that it had paragraphs, breaks, chapters but . . . the conversation all ran together without markings. As in:
They walked down the long gloomy hallway, looking back over their shouldars at the Spectre. - It's following us, I know it! - whimpered Charles Marten. - Nonsense, man, pull yourself together, it is just dust. And a little wind. Muttered Ralph Marterball.
(the above has nothing to do with the story and is instead something of my own poor attempt to convey the running together of thought that occurred in the book).

#153: Sounds a bit difficult to read. Hmm, I wonder if it is the same way in the version I downloaded to my Nook. . .
155MikeBriggs
154> Oh, it was understandable. I should have clarified what I meant. It is confusing that the book would have paragraph breaks, section breaks, chapter breaks, but ran conversation together in one paragraph without breaks between speakers or words spoken/unspoken. There was some way I understood what was going on, except for once when I had to reread, so there might have been some greater indication of speaker than I recall now. Definately didn't have normal quotation marks, single or double, though.

Into the Wild - a book from the point of view of a domestic kitten, Rusty, with access to the outdoors. Who takes advantage of this access to flee into the underbrush and join the ThunderClan, a band of warrior kitties. ThunderClan kitties may play fight among themselves, among the family, but their fights with the other clans, WindClan, RiverClan, and ShadowClan are far from gentle.
While Rusty (aka kittypet, Firepaw, Fireheart), trains with the ThunderClan, the ShadowClan goes on the warpath. War among the kitties. The wild kitties.
-- -- --
Through the TOLI (take it or leave it) challenges here on LibraryThing I have tested a category that I probably would otherwise have avoided. Young adult. The Hunger Games series were so good that I decided to test other works in this category (I was going to say genre, is Young Adult itself a genre?). First up was the first Harry Potter book, which I had seen in movie form eons ago, but had avoided in written form. It did not block further progress so I dipped my toe into the Warrior series, Into the Wild being the first book in that series.
Into the Wild starts off with an owned kitten, named Rusty, dreaming of catching and devouring a mouse. He walks up and stares at the pellets his twolegs have left him for sustenance. He groans and eats a few then crawls out into the backyard to sniff the air and stretch. Big fat lazy neighboring kitties contemptuously spotted. The woods looked at with longing. With a dash he sprints into the woods going further than he had ever gone before. A streak of red in the greenery. The smell of mouse. Wiggles, ready to pounce, when he himself is tackled by another cat. Graypaw, an apprentice warrior with the ThunderClan, and Rusty lay panting near each other, neither able to get the better of the other. Rusty learns that he is in ThunderClan territory and he really shouldn’t be eating their mice, prey being so scarce.
The leader, Bluestar, and a top warrior of the clan, Tigerclaw, wander up. Bluestar offers Rusty the chance to join their clan of warrior cats. Tigerclaw hisses and calls him kittypet. Rusty is tempted but needs time. The next night he enlists. Training, battle, daring deeds and kitties running around meowing and hissing fill out the book (which I say so I do not give out too much of the plot, though I think I’m still in chapter one, plot-wise).
Erin Hunter, the author, is pen name of Cherith Baldry, Kate Cary, Victoria Holmes, and Tui T Sutherland. Quite a large group, eh? Oddly enough, the style and quality remains even throughout the book. Four writers seem to work as well as one in this instance. The series itself has something like 35 books in it (there are many sub-series and side-books and the like so it is not quickly easy to determine the size of the series), and I do not know how the writing might have been broken down. Did all four write each and every book together? One or two write one or more of the subseries? No information came to light.
Would I recommend the book? Well, all the reviews I’ve seen seem to indicate the books are devoured eagerly by their intended audience. Nine to twelve year old girls. I am neither in that age bracket nor a girl, and yet I found the book quite entertaining. Will I read another book in this massive series? More than likely. Am I eagerly awaiting my next dip into the world of cats? Eagerly? No. Willing, yes. Returning to the question that began this paragraph, do I recommend the book? Yes. Just be aware both that it is not exactly intended for adults (if you are one), yet, at the same time, it does not keep the fighting, blood, and death away from view.

It is interesting in its way, the Honor book, third in the Ian Fleming series. Certain annoyances downgrade the rating. The end was stretched out an extra 25 or more pages. Everything was done but . . . . let us have 25 more pages, eh? Certain other things annoyed - Fleming being disgusted by the smell of tobacco in the fictional book, when in the real world he smoked like 60 cigarettes a day. Eh, that's what one snippet of a biography of him stated.
The book was flat, weak, annoying.

Are you enjoying the Briggs' books, Mike? I am especially interested in knowing about the Dragon Blood series.
187MikeBriggs
I entered Patricia Briggs' world through the Mercy Thompson series, and I've enjoyed every book in that series. Then I decided to this highly rated, by me, author to test a new way of absorbing books while at the same time expanding, slightly, to her other series. I listened by way of an audio book on ipod to the first book in a side series to the Thompson one.
Narrator was a man. Main character was a woman. Man read her parts in a false high pitched voice. It was quite painful and almost lead me away from Briggs. Read another Thompson book, liked. Eventually read the second book in that side series, Alpha and Omega, and liked it well enough, less so than the Thompson series. Mostly because I would be reading and suddenly I'd start hearing that narrator saying the female character's thoughts in his false high voice.
Well, one thing lead to another and I found TOLI. Which lead me to test other Briggs series. First the Dragon 2 book series. Dragon Bones and Blood. Dragon Blood involves a kingdom made up of five former kingdoms. The high king is something of an evil little tyrant, much like Ward's father, who had been leader in one of the sub-kingdoms. A brutal man. Liked beating his children. Dead in first chapter of first book. Ward would have become ruler in Hurog but for his hiding from future beatings by his assumption of the disguise of being stupid. That was used against him by the High king and others to try to put him into an asylum for embarrasing nobles.
Second book takes place four years after the action in the first.
Both have their strengths, both are entertaining, though both end kind of weakly.

It was good enough for what I paid for it. I might recommend getting it from the library, though. The series might be better if it actually followed the characters from the show instead of this one step distance thing. I kept thinking, as everything unfolded, that we were just getting one side of it. Just Castle's. Since he "wrote it". And he is putting thoughts and actions for the rest of the characters.

Wow, Mike! You have been extremely busy with the books lately.

It helps that I found some that I could read while at work. And I have found that reading more than one book at a time can result in many books ending on the same day.

252: Sandition - Jane Austen - 10/25/10-10/27/10 - read but not rated
Sandition was too much of a fragment to allow me to delve deep enough into it to get a feel of it or what it might have turned into. Oh, I got the general idea - husband and wife crash near a successful farmer's family; husband talks family who never goes anywhere but London to send along a daughter to visit Sandition - a seaside vacation spot husband is trying to develop; oldest daughter (I believe it was oldest daughter) sent along; husband -Mr. Parker, has three "invalid" relatives, brother, two sisters, a feeling that they are more sickly because they wish to be sickly, third brother is a wise-cracking fellow who arrives in last moments of chapter 12, and the fragment - all family, Mr. Parker, siblings, in Sandition; etc. I assume Charlotte Heywood would have been the main character, the woman matched up with some man. A man, Sir Edward Denham, flirts with her in the fragment but he does it because he expects he needs to, she does not fancy him. On the other hand there is a rich sickly young woman who would be "perfect" for Sir Edward Denham, has money and is sickly, who has just arrived on scene. bah, the whole cast of characters might have been present, maybe it was brother Arthur, youngest brother and "invalid" though healthy looking, or brother Sidney, the "funny" one, who was being set up for Charlotte. Maybe she was just going to watch while Sir Edward and Miss ...rich and sickly joined together.
I can see now why Sandition took so long to be completed and seems to have been completed just once, in 1975, while The Watsons seems to have been completed 5 or so times. While shorter, The Watsons fragment has a better construction and group of characters than Sandition.

#232: I need to return to that series! I have only read the first book.
234MikeBriggs
It is an interesting series, though each book is at least 500 to 700 pages long. Which means that I need at least 2 to 3 days to finish them.
235alcottacre
I bought the first 4 books in the series, but have never managed to get them read beyond book 1. Too many library books all the time!

Yes, I liked it. :) Interesting look into Tibet. I am uncertain, though, if I will read the sequels. It seemed quite complete as a stand-alone.

#252: I have never read anything by Robert Conroy, but since that one is tagged 'alternate history' I will have to give it a try.
254MikeBriggs
Robert Conroy's books are all alternate war type of books. I believe the first one he wrote involved the Germans attacking the USA at the turn of the 20th Century. His most recent, Red Inferno: 1945 (at least most recent read by me), involved the very last few months of WWII and something that might have happened. The Soviets launch an attack against the other Allies and make a drive to take over Germany and Europe.
