I don't have curry powder in my spice drawer.. shocking isn't it?

Today I am making crab cakes and rice pilaf.. I think..
I do it the easy way though and use some nice crab, and Zatarain's crab cake mix
a bit of lemon on the side...
yum

Zatarain's is ol' faithful in the delicious derby. No curry powder?! How did that happen?! Did you run out and forget to buy more? I get the one-pound bottles at the grocery store, and use one every 4-5 months.

I have no idea what I'll make for dinner tonight. I'm leaning towards smothered pork chops and roasted baby carrots with cornbread. That, or fried swai with spicy tartar sauce. (Tabasco plus horseradish.)

Come on over to The Dark Side. We're having leftover meatless spaghetti in honor of a) Good Friday and b) homecoming of my vegetarian Tennesseean (is that the right word? looks weird). Maybe I'll sprinkle it with some curry powder?

6richardderus
Apr 2, 2010, 1:56 pm

"Tennessean" looks wrong, too, but it's right. Ungainly word.

Meatless? Spaghetti usually is, no? But curry powder in tomato sauce is right tasty if you have some garlic in there too.

I thought meatless Fridays were tossed out in the 60s. Good Friday is different?

Apr 2, 2010, 2:32 pm

>6 richardderus: The actual spaghetti is meatless, but our sauce usually isn't. Meatless Fridays during Lent. No real sacrifice; old habits die hard and I usually subconsciously don't eat meat on Fridays. My favorite part of meatless Fridays in Lent are the fish fries & the TGINF (thank goodness it's not fried) dinners the local Catholic churches come up with. Yum!

I might sneak some curry powder into that sauce...my favorite veggie dip ever is mayonnaise mixed with a little salt & curry powder. Serious good stuff.

10richardderus
Apr 2, 2010, 2:51 pm

>9 tloeffler: TLo, that's a nummers dip...our Easter dinner will be the traditional ham with asparagus, rhubarb pie, and cocktail snacks of curried toast curls with sharp cheddar and chutney.

Meat in spaghetti sauce...not something I'm used to, unless it's a carbonara or a bolognese. And I prefer marinara to either on spaghetti. Angel-hair carbonara is fabOO, though.

11tloeffler
Apr 2, 2010, 2:54 pm

Easter ham is my very favorite dinner of the year. Daddy always cooks a fresh ham, and it is to die for. "Curried toast curls with sharp cheddar and chutney"? I want some!

12richardderus
Apr 2, 2010, 3:06 pm

>11 tloeffler: Buy a loaf of cheap white bread.
Trim off all crusts.
Melt a stick of butter. Stir in two tablespoons of curry powder and one teaspoon mustard powder. DON'T use prepared mustard! Then add Worcestershire sauce or Pickapeppa sauce until it's a darkish color.
Grate a pound of really sharp cheddar.
Spread the bread with the buttery glop, sprinkle some cheese in the middle, and roll the bread from one corner to the opposite corner (start with the corner of bread pointing towards you, in a diamond shape).
Shove a toothpick into the roll, put it on a baking sheet, lather rinse repeat until the whole sheet's covered.

Bake really hot. Edges should be brown. Take it out when the toast is toasty. Cool to taste (I like it a little warmer than the room) and serve with a bowl of chutney. Prepare to fend off marriage proposals and lascivious propositions.

31. The Reincarnationist 4 stars baby!

Photographer Josh Ryder nearly dies when a bomb explodes nearby. He is in fact, taking photographs when it happens. After waking in a hospital, he finds himself experiencing what he calls lurches back in time. Most of these lurches take him back to ancient Rome, his life as a priest, and the his love for the Vestal Virgin whom he loves.

Once he is recovered from the bomb blast, the lurches continue. He finds his way to The Phoenix Foundation, a renowned place of research into the past lives of children. Because of certain memories from a more recent lifetime, and due to the intense interest of the owners of the foundation, they make something of an exception for Josh. They do not take him on as a client, but he finds himself working with the foundation to prove the existence of past lives, including those that haunt him.

A trip to Rome triggers more and very intense lurches. He finds himself involved in murder and intrigue, just when it seems that the answers to his own questions lay in front of him. What follows is an intriguing look into the connections past lives have to current lifetimes, and people who have reincarnated within the same families to perhaps right karmic wrongs?

I liked this one a lot. Recommended.

32. The Map of True Places

This is a story of Zee. A young woman who grew up in Salem, in a house with a past. Her mother died when Zee was young, and she grew up living with her father, and his lover.

Life after the death of her mother, was easier, and more settled than life with her had ever been. Zee's mother suffered from bi-polar disorder, and the family suffered along with her.

Zee grew up and became a psycho-therapist. She treated those who suffered as her mother did, and perhaps was more empathetic than others might have been. Perhaps too much so. The death of one of her patients, sent Zee into a downward spiral. One was was all the worse because her father was now ill as well.

The story once again takes place in Salem, Massachusetts ...a place I love.
We revisit people and places from the last book, The Lace Reader, but this is in no way a sequel. It is a strong, solid, stand alone story of a Zee. A young woman who finally finds her true self. Recommended

33. Dream Angus is the name of a wonderful book by Alexander McCall Smith.
It is also the name of a beautiful lullaby from a CD of celtic folk music that I often listen to while driving. Here are the lyrics:

Can ye no hush your weepin'
all the wee lambs are sleepin'
Birdies and beasties are nestled together
Dream Angus is hurtlin' o'er the heather

Dreams to sell, fine dreams to sell
Angus is here wi' dreams to sell
Hush my sweet bairn and sleep without fear
Dream Angus has brought you a dream my dear.

List' to the curlew cryin'
Faintly the echos dyin'
Even the birdies and the beasties are sleepin'
But my bonny bairn is weepin' weepin'

http://www.ambaile.org.uk/en/item/item_audio.jsp?item_id=29289

And now for the book, McCalls take on the Celtic Myth, and a gift from my sweet friend...

Dream Angus is a tale of Angus, the son of the god Dagda and of the gentle Boann. Dagda is known as a leader of warriors, he carries a club with the power to kill, or to heal. Boan lives in the water, a genter spirit who knows only kindness and good. Dagda yearned to have Boann. He had a wife, and Boann a husband, but that meant nothing to the god. He killed and then assumed the appearance of a holy man who was cared for by Boann. He took her, and left her carrying his child. Angus. Angus was a special child who was born with the gift of giving dreams.

Nine months later, Dagda heard that his son had been born, and took his son taken from the gentle Boann, and brought him to his own house. Once under Dagda's roof, the infant bestowed dreams on all there, including Dagda. The dream left him in fear of the small and gentle child, so Angus was sent away to be brought up by Midir, another of his sons.

Such things have a way of working themselves out don't they? Particularly in myth and in song. Angus grew, and learned of his parentage....

There are more stories of young boys.. boys whose dreams were often without the blessings of Angus, whose lives were less gentle.

In the end, Angus finds himself lost in a dream. At least, he loses his heart to the beautiful Caer, who comes to him as he sleeps. He knows he will not be happy again until he finds his elusive love.

Despite all evidence to the contrary, I do believe in magic and in true love..

Thank you rd.

34. What is Left the Daughter by Howard Norman

I have to admit that at first I had a difficult time with what seemed to me to be short clipped sentences in the dialogue. I have never heard anyone speak like that for an extended period. Once I was able to get past that, I was drawn deeply into this story of a star crossed family in Nova Scotia during WWII.

We immediately learn that Wyatt Hillyer is suddenly orphaned when both of his parents leap from different bridges on the same day. Thus begins the story of Wyatt's life.

The story is in the form of a letter being written from Wyatt to Marlais that is both the history of his life, and perhaps a plea for understanding and forgiveness.
The characters are all so compelling, quirky and frankly unusual that I could not help but be drawn in.

Things take an understandably tense turn when Wyatt's cousin Tilda becomes involved with a German . Hans Mohring is a student, his family does not support Hitler, and in fact moved to Denmark to escape his reign of terror. Hans is not embraced by Tilda's family, nor accepted by most in the small town where they live.

The pace of this book is somewhat slow, but it seems to fit Wyatt's quiet and painfully honest narrative .

Bottom line is this is a book worth reading, a story worth hearing and in fact, I suspect that you will be unwilling to put it down once you begin. I know I was.

long night.. or should I say short night ?
Still bleeding, but I am hoping not as much. I don't plan on changing the bandage for an hour or two yet..

he drank some water.. and we went outside to pee.. well, he peed, I just cheered him on. He refuses to lie down though.. on either side. and cried unless I had my hands on him.

I am hopeful, though that he is on the mend. ?
i hope he sleeps a bit.. me too...

:)

That he is not eating is a concern, because of his addison's. It could signal a crash. This is my next concern.

sure

If Fritz has frequent spells of not eating, combined with lethargy..
you might ask to have his lytes checked to make sure he has a good ratio and that he need not be tested for Addison. It sometimes behaves that way, too. Makes Dx difficult..

I just bought Angeology. I have not read it because I got involved in an ARC of The Passage. This is an absolutely delicious kind of vampire book but mainly about a 6-year-old girl. It is just over 700 pages and I am just over 200. If you are a parent you will get hooked by this book. If you like blood and guts there is something there for you. It is kind of horror. It is kind of science fiction. It is also kind of paranormal. It has a little bit of everything except romance so far. I thought I had better get cracking on it as it is a whopper. We are talking Under The Dome big. Then I have a Jefferson Bass book that is on loan from a sweet LTer. It seems like I have read some titles that touched on Angels mixing with humans, but titles escape me. Keep us posted on Angeology McKait.

Tks for the review of the new Brunonia Barry. I may end up borrowing it from somewhere, as I wasn't overwhelmed by the first book -- it was sometimes too self-consciously clever. I did request the ARC from LTER, but got the Simon Tolkien book instead (which is still AWOL...)

I have a friend who absolutely loathes clowns -- a visceral revulsion, with an element of fear. He's the least superstitious person I know, so where this comes from, I don't know...

120kidzdoc
Edited: Apr 10, 2010, 6:36 am

#119: I think this comes from a bad childhood experience with clowns. The hospital I work at employs clown doctors, to cheer up the kids. Most kids enjoy them, a sizable minority are initially afraid of them but quickly warm up to them, and a tiny percentage are terrified of them. (The clowns ask the nurses which kids would be most appropriate for a visit; they usually don't go to the rooms of infants and younger kids.) I've seen a few parents and adult visitors who avoided the clowns like the plague, faces stricken with disgust or fear.

There is a term for people who fear clowns: coulrophobia.

121mckait
Apr 10, 2010, 7:58 am

I knew my LT friends would be interested in the horrible unnatural, unspeakable clowness of the ghost. I mean sheesh!

mime..lol
clown doctors? Now I know what is worse than a kid being in the hospital

Okay, I am so smart I scare myself sometimes. Duncan's licking was making things difficult. His wound is not healing as quickly as I would hope. I needed sleep! I found a mens shirt.. a small one ... that my boys had grown out of. I cut off the collar and the bottom half of the shirt. and put it on him. Mind you , he is not happy.. but it is doing the trick. I will take it off when I am able to keep an eye on him, but for now, I am off to the store ...

If you promise not to tell him, I will post a pic....

Chiming in with the tale of Clown fear.

My 27 year old daughter has two severe phobias. When she is an elevator, she gets very anxious, to the point of panic attacks. And, she is VERY afraid of clowns.

We recently visited a friend at a local hospital. Originally we were the only people in the elevator, but shortly thereafter five more were added. As the doors were almost closing, one of the people in the front of the elevator said, "Oh, look, here comes a clown down the hall and he wants to come in."

The look on my daughter's face was sheer terror. Luckily, the clown did not get in the elevator. I swear, I think she would have fainted.

Wondering what were the odds of this occurrence, later Breanna laughed with our family when we told the story.

Kath, why not keep the shirt on Duncan, put a deck of cards in his paws, and then sit him at a card table...

35. Angelology by Danielle Trussoni

Excellent. Enjoyable.

This was hands down one of the best books that I've read in a long time.
The characters are compelling and drew me in immediately. It is rich with history, religion, suspense and just plain good story.

From 1943 to 1999 we learn about the discipline of angelology. The study of Angels, Watchers, Nephilim, Humankind. We are shown the epic war that has been fought since the beginning of time.

Gabriella, Celestine, Seraphina and Raphael all the way down to Evangeline, Sister Evangeline that is. This is a war fought in the streets, the churches and even families. The suspense never ends, The mysteries and horrors never before mentioned that involve some of the most wealthy and well known in every day life. Those family dynasties had to belong somewhere, and this book suggests where...You will be surprised.

HIGHLY recommended five plus stars. Keeper.

My two rescue kitties are the feistiest of the bunch. Tigger literally broke into my home (a cat burglar...) and decided to stay. Cassie (aka Cassiopeia) was handed to me by my Yemeni deli owner, who told me "you take her, or I kill her". Apparently Cassie, instead of catching mice, had been playing with bags of potato chips in the basement. But then she was only 8 weeks old... She loves me, flees other humans (my landlord doesn't know she exists, six years later!) and bullies the other cats. Go figure.

Angus is gorgeous. Duncan must think he has been presented with a friend as a reward for eating his dinner!!

All of my pets have been rescues of one sort or another. It works out .. I save them, they save me. Good dependable friends.

No reading yesterday, too busy grooming poor Angus. The clinic took care of his various issues, mites etc... but he was a huge mess, all matted and burrs. He has a couple of bald spots poor baby ..from me getting rid of mats, but he will sort out.

36. I finally finished Ghost A Firsthand Account Into the World of Paranormal Activity by Katherine Ramsland

This was a non-fiction about a journalists interest in and investigation of the world of ghosts and ghost hunting. It is written in a very conversational manner, making it a breeze to read. Katherine must be a Gemini, because each time she presents you with why something has to be true ( or untrue, for that matter) she comes up with some reason why it may not be. Each time she feels she has proof of ghosts, she looks for ways to disprove herself. This is a very satisfying read for me, because I do the same to myself, since I am a Gemini!

Most of you already know my feelings on the subject of ghosts, but I love a good spooky read and this provided it. I recommend it to anyone who believes, or disbelieves! I do not recommend it if you are fearful of the subject.

She is a forensic psychologist by the way, not just a kook looking for cash from a book. She has also written about Crime and Vampires.

213mckait

37. Islands of Genius by Darold A Treffert..I have posted a review, but will add it here..

Islands of Genius is a wonderful window in the world of savants, both congenital and acquired. It gives us a glimpse of extraordinary talent displayed by both neurotypical people and those wo have been diagnosed with autism or have a disability of some type. It gives us an opportunity to become a witness to something we do not often come across in our daily lives.

Treffert nis a psychiatrist who has studied the incidence of savants, beginning in July of 1962, while he was a member of the staff at Winnebago Mental Health Institute near Oshcosh wisconsin. He continues until this day.

He offers us both scientific and medical data and anecdotal accounts of his journey into this unusual world and those who have been found to be savants.

Treffert also includes a number of websites for those of us who are curious to learn more, and also for educators who can find help when dealing with extraordinarily gifted children.

This is a easy to read adventure into what to some is a completely unknown area. I found each and everychapter to be either helpful, intriguing or both. Some of the stories are so filled with the love and support the families offer, that it warms the heart.

Absolutely recommended.

Apr 19, 2010, 7:37 pm

I admit to having already had an interest in autism, savants and synesthesia. Although synesthesia has not really been mentioned yet, asie from the forward By Daniel Tammet

My mother saw different kinds of pain as different colors. Childbirth was vivid yellow. Her heart attack was teal. She never admitted it to anyone (after being ridiculed as a child) until I did a report about composer Amy Beach, who was a synesthete -- she saw different music tonalities as different colors. Mom was so relieved to know that there was a name for this oddity, and she was not crazy!

She said she hated to watch the Florida Marlins play baseball, because their batting helmets at that time were the color of her heart attack! But she said she would never delay calling the medics for a heart attack again, as she did with her first one -- the color of her heart pain was so distinctive, she would recognize it immediately!

It says Watch Past Life the new television series based on M.J.Rose's Reincarnationist series

Complain to the publisher and tell them you want to buy books, not commercials -- and that if they insist on defacing their own books before they sell them, you will buoycott them!

Though I'm not sure how that's much different from my copy of The Killer Angels which has a band at the top of the cover saying, "Now the Major Motion Picture GETTYSBURG"

232mckait
Edited: Apr 21, 2010, 8:53 pm

Well, I have thought about that... but how often do you gift a paperback? A nice hardback, that is what I most often gift...

How do you gift someone with a book that has an ad embossed on the cover..
I went to the authors website to write and ask her thoughts on why the publisher
did it...
seems she worked in advertising for years... so it makes me wonder if she thought it was a great idea?

Wonder if she will write back?

I even try to avoid the paperbacks that say Oprah's Pick on them...
but it really doesn't bother me. This seems very intrusive to say the least..
and I would never gift it..

What if this is a trend and all hardbound books have ads on the cover?!?!?
horrors!

Dear Kathy,
I'm sorry you feel that way but those aren't ads- they are announcements. Whenever books are make into TV series or win awards or made into movies the publisher's starburst the information on the cover. It's an honor not an ad.

Thanks for reading.

246tymfos
Edited: Apr 23, 2010, 7:57 am

I'm still going to be the contrarian here.

In the library field, in this era of computer games and videos and Facebook and Twitter, we are increasingly resorting to a "whatever it takes" approach to get books into young people's hands and get them reading.

If a tie-in to a movie or TV show causes them to pick up a book and read it, I say "Great!" (I say it louder if it's a good book, though ;)

It was the movie tie-in to "Gettysburg" that led me to read The Killer Angels, which is a Pulitzer Prize winner, and one of my all-time favorites -- a very good book indeed. It would have been a crying shame if I'd missed it. So this issue may be a bot too personal for me!!!

I am sticking with balderdash, do something inside if need be.
I hate having stickers, ads, announcements, caca of all kinds on my books, dust covers etc.

Are they advertising themselves into a deeper hole?

Another agree to disagree moment.

254Chatterbox
Apr 23, 2010, 8:58 pm

Kath, I thought about the Bonhoeffer bio, but wavered as it looked as if it might have too much of an evangelical agenda vs. being a straightforward bio -- his Wilberforce bio was more hagiography than bio, and that's not what I want from a bio of Bonhoeffer. I'm fascinated with the guy, but would want a really nuanced bio, not just "washn't he a saint", without footnotes or bibliography. I can't remember which of those was lacking in the Wilberforce bio, but I know it got up my nose, big time. So I'll look forward to your verdict!!!

Vine-wise, I opted for the book about tibet & one about yemen, as well as Emma Larkin's book about Burma last week, so I'm obviously on a "tragic/dysfunctional" country binge. So I offset that with two mysteries & some chick lit!!! (Eliz. Peters, Alan Furst & Emily Giffin...)
