Preramble...
a) Rules will be posted in the first message of the thread.
b) Revisions to the rules will be generally agreed upon by whoever is actively playing the game at the time, and updated in this by whoever posted the first message (in this case, moi).
c) The person who posts the Challenge is heretoforafter known as the Challenger.
d) Everyone else is a Respondent.
e) "Weekend" begins 4 PM (LT-Time) on Friday afternoons (unless it's a holiday, in which case - Thursday afternoon), and ends 8 AM Monday morning (unless ~that~ is a holiday, so Tuesday, then).

Game Rules:
1) The Challenger must post as much of a set of contiguous lyrics as necessary to allow Respondents a reasonable chance of determining the name of the song. Finding them on a web site somewhere in order to ensure an accurate Challenge is okey dokey.
2) If the name of the song is in the lyrics , substitute (Song Title) in its place.
3) Any variation to what is required of the Respondent should be mentioned at this time.
4) It is considered Poor Sportsmanship for a Respondent to use the Internet Machine to search for the lyrics to a Challenge. A foxing of your most cherished books is still inadequate punishment to wish upon such ne'er-do-wells.
5) Unless otherwise specified, the Respondent is to answer with the title of the song, and the name of the original songwriter or band that recorded it. Other chit-chat is fine, but first things first, okay?
6) If only the Title, but not the Writer/Band is correct, the first Respondent with the correct Title "wins", under the discretion of the Challenger.
7) If there are no responses within 24 hours (48 on weekends), the Challenger may divulge the answer, and post another challenge.
8) If the Challenger has not acknowledged the first Respondent within 24 hours (48 on weekends, the MOST RECENT Respondent may declare the Challenge comatose and post a Challenge of his/her own.
9) If that person does not post a Challenge within 24 hours (48 on weekends), then the Respondent prior to the now-MIA Challenger may post a challenge.
10) NO ONE may start a second Challenge while one is outstanding, unless the thread has been dormant for an entire WEEK.

new song (actually a rather old one):

Places I've known
Things that I'm growin'
Don't taste the same without you.
I got myself in
The worst mess I've been
Find myself starvin' without you.

Hi Jim,
Administrivia here...
Game rules 7, 8 and 9 all have "24 12" (actually, it looks like "24 12") in them. From the Administrivia Discussion thread (or whatever I named it back then), overwhelmingly (3 to 0, if I recall correctly) to change it back to 24. Make is so, (msg) #1.

Thanks, WHL. updated as requested. I bet you know this one.

Actually, I didn't. I looked it up, and in short, I never particularly liked this particular band, so I don't know the song.

6AnnieMod
Apr 27, 2010, 12:52 am

That sounds like "Walk Away".

No idea who sings it though - one of the groups of Joe Walsh I suspect because this is one of his songs... (and because of what WHL said I am pretty sure it is not from his solo ones)

7Jim53
Apr 27, 2010, 9:45 am

"Walk Away" is correct, by the James Gang, featuring, as Annie noted, Joe Walsh, who more recently has been wielding his ax as an Eagle. I was never crazy about them, but heard this in a store yesterday, which prompted me to use it.

Back to you, Annie!

8AnnieMod
Apr 27, 2010, 2:43 pm

I was pretty sure it is not an Eagles one - I just remembered Walsh. Never could keep all the groups straight...

Ok. something old:

The day was bright, the air was sweet
The smell of honeysuckle charmed you off your feet
You tried to sing, but couldn't squeaks
In fact, you loved him so you couldn't even speak

That's no mistake.

Whoever gets this one, please go on and post your lyrics. Thanks.

12AnnieMod
Apr 28, 2010, 6:45 pm

My first thought was one of the "I Pray The Lord My Soul to take/keep/whatever" (Keith Sweat's for example) but something was off and just rereading it now something clicked - "Please Love me Forever" - Bobby Vinton's version but it was a remake I think... Was it originally Wanda Jackson's song? Or I am off by a mile :)

Unless if someone confirms though, I am not posting the next one though - that is more a feeling than an answer so might be wrong

13Boobalack

You're right on the song! I don't know who did it first, but I like it best by Tommy Edwards.

A million times, and still you never came.
They go on loving you just the same.
I know that somebody's trying.

So please, return the love you took from me.
Or please, let me know if it can't be me.
I know when somebody's lying.
I know when somebody's lying.

Chickity China the Chinese chicken

Watchin' X-Files with no lights on

Like Harrison Ford I'm getting frantic
Like Sting I'm tantric
Like Snickers, guaranteed to satisfy
Like Kurasawa I make mad films
Okay, I don't make films
But if I did they'd have a Samurai
Gonna get a set a' better clubs
Gonna find the kind with tiny nubs
Just so my irons aren't always flying off the back-swing
Gotta get in tune with Sailor Moon
'Cause the cartoon has got the boom anime babes
That make me think the wrong thing

I was just coming back, having checked the name, to say that I was wrong and let's see if someone else comes up with the right title. Too late for that I guess, so here's another. It always makes me think of a short British dude in boxer shorts.

It's been almost 24 hours, so it's
"River of Souls" by Dan Fogelberg.

Here's the next one:

Hellllllloooooooooooo out there in LT Land. Am I the only one still playing this game?

Wild guess -
I wouldn't happen to be Que Sera, Sera, would it?

41AnnieMod
Edited: May 4, 2010, 11:28 pm

Not sure if the name is "Bewitched, bothered, and bewildered" or just "Bewitched" - when Supremes did it, it was the shorter one (at least this is how it is listed if I am not wrong) but I think Doris Day's was with the full name. (And for some stupid reason I am hearing Ella singing it... - had she recorded it? I cannot remember such a recording but I am hearing it in my head...)

42Boobalack
May 5, 2010, 2:13 am

Nope, Mr. House. AnnieMod got it. It's "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered."

Ella Fitzgerald sang it, as did Frank Sinatra, Helen Forrest, Gordon Jenkins, and dozens of other artists. It was introduced in the movie "Pal Joey." The Supremes didn't use the full, correct title for some reason.

43AnnieMod
May 5, 2010, 11:05 am

:) Yeah - the first I thought about was the Supremes version so it took me a while to connect the dots when you threw Doris Day in the mix.

OK - that's from one of my favorite contemporary female singers:

It's been seven hours and fifteen days
Since you took your love away
I go out every night and sleep all day
Since you took your love away
Since you been gone I can do whatever I want
I can see whomever I choose
I can eat my dinner in a fancy restaurant

Linda Ronstadt?

What was the song name though... "Willing"? I remember the last line: "And I'll be willing to be moving" and all the T-places above but might be wrong on the name.

48WholeHouseLibrary
May 5, 2010, 12:46 pm

You've got it right, Annie, except you added a "g" - it's Willin.

I learned to play the tune on my guitar off a Richard Shindell CD. It was written by Lowell George.

49Jim53
May 5, 2010, 2:08 pm

That's it, Annie. As WHL said, is an old Lowell George song. I had heard his version with Little Feat first, but I like Linda's. There were a bunch of guys on my floor in college with real crushes on her. Back to you!

50AnnieMod
May 5, 2010, 5:30 pm

The only version I had heard is Linda's (or the only one that I remember - might have heard it other times and either to have forgotten or something to just have been a bit off so it never worked for me). I can never remember which song titles were having the end g and which not... oops.

Next:

I wish I was like you
Easily amused
Find my nest of salt
Everything's my fault
I'll take all the blame
Aqua sea-foam shame
Sunburn with freezer-burn
Choking on the ashes of her enemy

AnnieMod~The lyrics. I didn't know the name. It sounds so frightening and so sorrowful. Also, I don't get most of the meanings: Dog food stalls with the beefcake pantyhose would be one. I think I get the junkie with the plastic eyeballs, though. Sad. Very sad.

59AnnieMod
May 6, 2010, 3:53 pm

Starting on my favorite female singers so something from another one of them - and something a bit more cheerful:

In my imagination
There is no complication
I dream about you all the time
In my mind a celebration
The sweetest of sensation
Thinking you could be mine

60katelisim
May 6, 2010, 4:09 pm

^oh, that sounds sooooo familiar, but it's not coming to me

@ Boobalack: Beck's Loser is an 'accident' song. He and a friend were goofing around w/ a backbeat and he improvised the entire song to make fun of the rap and grunge genres that were big at the time (it is sung as a rap and the whole 'depressing' side for grunge). He even thought the lyrics were stupid and that's how the "I'm a loser" chorus came to be.

61Boobalack
May 6, 2010, 7:10 pm

Thanks for the info, katelisim. That's a relief. lol I did think the junkie with the plastic eyeballs was in reference to the pop-eyed way junkies look at times, though. It would fit right in with what they were doing at the time the song came into being! I guess you can see how much I know about today's music. Ha!

62DeltaQueen50

63AnnieMod
May 6, 2010, 11:26 pm

Had I? Oops - you can say that I do not have many favorites from the female crowd. Yeah - that's one of hers. And because this will probably help a lot anyway - the song is from the late 80s and has very remember-able chorus (or whatever is called the thing that get repeated now and then in the songs)

64katelisim

The song is "I should be so lucky" - Kylie Minogue... I though this will be easy. Next:

The only girl I care about has gone away

but little does she know that when she left that day
along with her she took my heart.

80WholeHouseLibrary

81AnnieMod
May 11, 2010, 8:21 pm

"mack" in my previous sentence should be read as "back" of course :)

If it was close to breaking into a yodel, that's what was bothering me then - not my type of voice:) and I had mentioned a few times that I rarely like female singers...

next one - something older than me:

That should be easy:

Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.

Something very popular again (at least where I grew up) - most of the lyrics repeat the title but there are some passages that do not... so one of them:

Secretly, the only words of that song are "relax, don't do it"

Hmm, so I took the top played song in my iTunes (which is probably much different than my iPod). . . It had a fair amount of success, here it is:

I am hiding from some beast
But the beast was always here
Watching without eyes

Now its just what I've become
What am I waiting for
Its already done

I've never seen you shine so bright

I love you.
Don't let us part.
I love you.
I always knew
It would be you.
Since I heard your lilting laughter,

Peg 'O My Heart -- I like it by either Buddy Clark or Dean Martin

I'm in love with you.
Let me hear you whisper
That you love me, too.
Keep the love-light glowing
In your eyes so blue.

I've never understood the expression "in love with." I understand "I love you," but what if the object of your affection doesn't love you? Then you can't truthfully say "I'm in love with you." It's the little things that can drive one craaaaaaaazeeeeee. How can the person singing the above song say "I'm in love with you" before ascertaining that the other person will say "I love you, too?" Apparently the guy singing "Peg 'O My Heart" got it!

135AnnieMod
May 17, 2010, 5:32 pm

I get to fly across the States and the game dies again...

The expression that translates to "in love with" in Bulgarian is kinda more... understandable. It's a clear one-side affection...

And the song is "Let Me Call You Sweetheart" - Neal Young comes to mind but it might be easier to answer who did not sang it. Or at least sounds like it.

Dear John - Hank Williams ?

(the "don't make me no coffee" was getting on my nerves for years until I got used to this type of structuring the sentence - my teachers spent years explaining that you cannot use 'no' after "don't", it should be 'any')

149Boobalack
May 18, 2010, 6:19 pm

I have a hard time explaining double negatives to my husband. I think it's because he listened to a lot of C&W music when he was a youngster -- later, too. He has, though, stopped himself mid-sentence at times and corrected himself, so I've made progress.

150AnnieMod
May 18, 2010, 7:02 pm

Bulgarian has double negatives but this one won't translate with a double negative even in Bulgarian. So I could not make up my mind on how that can be valid. Until I got used to it.:)

204WholeHouseLibrary

Technically, it's just Remember?, but I didn't think anybody would get it.

He played here in Austin a few years ago, opening for Leo Kottke. He autographed the CD for me and MrsHouseLibrary, and looked at me kind of strange. He remembered me from a previous time he had played in Austin. In fact, I've been to 8 shows he's done over the past 30+ years. In this particular incident, I was still married to ThiMs, and after the show, we went to talk to him (and get yet another CD autographed). He was seated at the corner of the bar. ThiMs (Thorn in My side) danm near lept across the edge of the bar to grab his shirt and accuse (nor the right word) him of being somewhat distantly related to a a friend of hers in NJ. And THAT is how Tom remembers me - being married to a rabid concert-goer.

Jim, it's not Tarantino's best, imo. I much prefer Jackie Brown and Pulp Fiction.

Anyway, onto the next song:

Blue jean baby, L.A. lady, seamstress for the band

If I'm remembering this correctly, it's rather ancient. The wordplay says musical theatre. "Insane," and to a lesser extent "fury," suggest "mad." Is it "Mad about the boy"? That would fit the meter fairly closely.

Being a bridge player may be what helps me in this area, as I have many older people to ask (rules just say can't use an "Internet Machine", which is quite hilarious, it's called a "browser", not a "machine").

It sounded old, and so I asked one of them. They tell me this is a song called "Pistol Packing Mama", also by the Andrews Sisters, so I'm going to "Trust the Mob" (those that have seen 1 vs 100 would get the reference) and go with:

Pistol Packing Mama - Andrews Sisters

281Boobalack
Edited: Jun 24, 2010, 5:37 pm

We all know it's not called an "Internet Machine." We were being funny. Actually, the "Internet Machine" that one uses to search for different items is called a search engine, which is accessed through a browser, rather than being a browser.

Do those many older people you use for reference also know how to use punctuation? ;-)

True, the rules don't state that one can't ask another person, but I think the general consensus is that one should know the song without help in order to make a guess. If I am in error, I'm sure I shall be corrected.

At any rate, that is correct, so please post your lyrics. Thanks.

By the way, the exact title is "Pistol Packin' Mama."

You are both correct in what you say. It is the theme from The Princess Bride, and "Love" is part of the title.

Hint: it was written by Mark Knopfler
Bigger hint: All of the words of the title are in the first (and 3rd) line of the chorus.

"Storybook Love" by Mark Knopfler

(Only thing that makes sense other than "Love is a Storybook", but then he'd have put instead based on the rules, so that can't be it.)

I'm assuming based on his lack of access, that one of us is supposed to check and validate.

I believe the song was sang under the name "I Think I'm Paranoid" by Garbage in the late 90s - I almost can remember MTV blasting it every Sunday when I was trying to find something to watch... but WHL might be correct for its origins :)

#308 you might be thinking of a song called "Bend Me, Shape Me" back in the late sixties/early seventies. It was from the "Shot Wad" collection, aka one-hit wonders; I believe the band was called American something. As I remember, the lyrics in #306 would have fit it, but not those in #305.

The American Breed? But if we are talking for the same "Bend Me, Shape Me", it was originally recorded by the Outsiders (I think?) - I am almost sure it was not originally done by The American Breed. I know the title because I heard it way too many times in childhood sitting in the car listening to my mother's stupid music, always playing some stupid "Easy Listening" station from the 70's and early 80's (i.e. Air Supply, Neil Diamond, Kenny Rogers, Barbara Streisand, etc. GAG!).

The song is "How can I be sure?"

Who sang it? God only knows! If I had to take a guess, I'll say Simply Red.

I have been forever brain damaged by this genre of music.

#318,

Sorry if it offended you, but when you go thru 18 years of having to listen to stuff that you have been basically lulled into, and finally realize that you have freedom, and a life, when you enter college, and can finally listen to what you want to listen to (that's Fall of 1993 for me), you can't help but express your thoughts every time you see or hear what has haunted you for many years.

I'm glad we can at least agree on one band stinking it up! For me, my message to Air Supply:

Even the nights are better, since I quit having to hear you!

Anyway, the lyrics for the next round (and one hint, this ain't something you'd hear an in elevator in the late 80s!). Actually, there is one video game that if you ever played it, you'll probably get this one instantly! (I modified one word in case there are some deep religious nuts that think it's a sin, can't accept that life also exists outside of church, and so therefore, for genuine lyrics, replace "***" with "uck")

What happened to integrity?
I don't see it on MTV
All I see is choreography
And I'll never be a dancer

What happened to puberty?
Bad skin and insecurity?
And who the f*** is Felicity?
'Cuz I got problems of my own

Am I alone?

320AnnieMod
Jul 6, 2010, 12:58 pm

Being lulled or whatever is no excuse for being rude and offending a lot of people - you might be fine talking like this to your friends but it is rude in an internet forum... We all have music that we do not like but I do not think that anyone else said that someone's music is brain damaging people.

Oh, and some people may find your "religious nuts" even more offending. I am not even close to religious but I do not think than we should call people that are religious or that are shy from seeing such words "nuts"... Everyone has the right to believe in whatever they want and it is just a courtesy not to make fun of them because of that.

Anyway - that's Goldfinger's Spokesman - do not like it at all but had heard it enough times to recognize it.

I was raised Catholic, and have since converted to Lutheran when I got married. I have ran into many crazies in the Southeastern US.

For example:

1) Some afternoon in the middle of the week, I am randomly walking, and trip over something and it involves pain. I say "OH F***!" (i.e. not directed at anybody whatsoever), and this crazy nut comes to me and starts trying to give me some stupid lecture about how God is going to get me, and how I am going to hell for saying such words.

2) Another, I'm at a chess tournament on a Saturday afternoon, and this Southern Baptist person is going around preaching religion in the lobby of the hotel, and is telling everyone that Baptists are right and everyone else wrong (Uhm...hello, Religion is a belief, not a proven fact), and that they are going to heaven, and that other Christians are going to hell because they are wrong in the way they believe, and that all others were going to hell because they didn't believe in Jesus (uhm...I also have Jewish friends). No matter what you try to say to them that it's a belief and not a proven fact, they will counter you until your face turns blue. (I was catholic at the time).

3) A third instance, by a non-denominational Christian, said flat to my face "Catholics are not Christians, Catholicism is bullshit!".

4) And finally a fourth, basically a religious colt that basically thought he was Jesus, always wanted to be part of various circles of friends, but nobody would include him after 1 or 2 tries because no matter what you talked about, he would find a way to twist it into a religion lecture in under 2 minutes. The holy day for Christians of any sort is Sunday, not 2am Thursday morning while eating at a 24-hour restaurant with other college friends.

So the answer is yes, there are "religious nuts" out there.

If you go to church, does that make you a "religious nut"? Absolutely NOT! A religious nut is one that can't keep their beliefs to themselves after being told that the listener(s) is/are not interested in hearing their speel (instances 1 and 4 above), or one who feels so insecure that they have to go around telling others who aren't the same religion as themselves that they are flat out wrong and going to hell (instances 2 and 3 above). A religious nut is also one that can't seem to understand the difference between religion and everyday life. There are other humans out here. Some of us are heavily religious. Some of us not heavily religious (this would be me). Some of us not religious at all. There is life outside your little world. Don't expect everyone to be like you, and learn, get a grip, get a life, whatever you want to call it, if someone says something that you don't agree with, unless it's specifically directed at you. If you don't like the f-word, yell at someone if they give you the f-bomb, but if they are directing it at themselves, and you happen to be in the vacinity, get a grip!

It is possible to be "religious" and be "normal", but it's also possible to be a "religious nut".

Eastern Orthodox with a 12% (or thereabouts) Muslim minority. And some other smaller ones - some Catholics (close to where I am born actually), some other Christian ones, the usual mix from a country that lies between the Christian lands and the Muslim ones. I do not mind foul language but my Gradma will probably start chasing you with the broom for such words - and she is not even religious. :)

Anyway - next:

I know that you've been told
It's not fair to tease
So if you come on cold
I'm really gonna freeze
If you don't want me to be cold as ice

ThrillerFan~

Thank you for ruining an otherwise pleasant little game. You must be one unhappy wo man. I just looked at your profile and discovered that you are not a woman. At least, you mentioned a wife, so one could assume such. You definitely are rude and obnoxious.

I was raised in the Southeastern United States of America. I am not a religious nut. I've only known a couple of those, but their beliefs are sincere, so I respect them. I also respect your belief, whatever it is, but I do not respect you for being so critical of everything. I, myself, am a Deist, but any religion, so long as it's believers are sincere, has my respect. Because you don't like it doesn't mean it is stupid, nutty, crazy, despicable, whatever.

Some of the lyrics posted in this thread have made me a little queasy to tell the truth. At least one of them was a tad masochistic, but I kept my mouth shut fingers still about them. I wouldn't be afraid to speak out, it's just that I have some manners. Perhaps you should invest in some.

Sincerely,

Lettie

PeeEss~You probably shouldn't let a few odd people in your life color your opinions so much. Are you that impressionable? If the music of your mother still haunts you, it seems that you would benefit from the services of a psychiatrist.

And in the words of Greg Gutfeld on "Red Eye," If you do not agree with me, lady sir, your are a (insert phrase of your choice here). ‹(^¿^)›

Lest I forget. Thank you, AnnieMod.

"Treat Me Nice"
Elvis Presley

Boobalack,
the King it is. And the song is correct of course.:) Had been in Beatles/Presley mood these days.

All yours.

PS: And some of the lyrics were disturbing but that's music and everyone can like whatever they want :)

That's what I tried to say. Even though some lyrics creep me out, I don't call them to anyone's attention. I know about that "different drummer." lol

Let there be wind,
An occasional rain,
Chili con carne,
Sparkling champagne.
Let there be birds
To sing in the breeze,
Someone to bless me,
Whenever I sneeze.

Was agreeing with you :)

That's one I had heard sang by Natalie Cole's - "Let There Be Love" maybe? Never saw an official announcement of that song (and i had mentioned the way they mangle names here I think), I know that "Let there be you, let there be me" is the first line of the song I am thinking about but the name can be way off.

328Boobalack
Jul 7, 2010, 4:55 pm

But you said it so much better than I did. I tend to get a tad verbose in case you hadn't noticed. lol

That's the song. It's been sung by many -- Nat "King" Cole, Julie London, Ella and more.

329AnnieMod
Jul 8, 2010, 6:04 am

:) I had mentioned a few times that female singers are kinda... confusing for me. Not a big fan of most voices so not that good with them (Now - Ella, Nat and some others are exceptions)

Next:

When I am kissed, I want his lips to really kiss me.
When we're apart, I want his heart to really miss me.
I want to know he loves me so his eyes are misting.
That's the way - I want to be loved.

Yeah, yeah, yeah,
I want the world to know.
If Shakespeare thought that Juliet
Really loved Romeo
From the time they met,
He would blow his top if he could see
Just how you've been lovin' me.

Not sure if those are exact, but they're close enough!

That's Why (I Love You So) ? No idea who sings it though - I can hear the voice but I do not know the name

Oops, we simulposted. lol You got it, AnnieMod, so go ahead and post your lyrics.

I lost track of the time. Sorry. Apparently nobody is going to get "That's Why I Love You So" by Jackie Wilson.

337AnnieMod
Jul 11, 2010, 8:00 pm

Jackie Wilson? That's one of his? OK - I was way off on where I was trying to place the voice :)

OK - that's on the radio just now so:

"Step one - you find a girl to love
Step two - she falls in love with you
Step three- you kiss and hold her tightly"

At first I thought that was The Fray song How to Save a Life. . . but then realized it wasn't. No idea on what it actually is though.

339AnnieMod
Jul 12, 2010, 5:25 am

Nope, not the Fray song

The artist had died very young and that was his last song, becoming a hit after he dies actually. (and that had been quite a lot of years ago)

I though that this one will be easy - Eddie Cochran's "Three steps to Heaven"

Next:

Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was waiting for me
It took so long
Still I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually

Well, we've gone way over the time limit, and AnnieMod hasn't been around for a few days, so in the interest of keeping this thread alive...

Well, I've been afraid of changing 'cause I've
Built my life around you
But time makes you bolder, even children get older
And I'm getting older too

That would be Good Morning Starshine from the Broadway musical Hair.

I'll lock the vagrant winter out and I'll bolt my wandering in

But she's got {song title here} so I guess she'll have to go

I can't believe you could just turn and leave.
You did it so easily.
You pulled my world out from under me..
Look what you've done to me.

How could you end it this way
After the love that we made?
God how I wish you had stayed.
Can't you see that
I just want you back?

This is one of the most heartbreaking songs I've ever heard. Especially the way she (the one I'm thinking of) sings it.

It seems that nobody is going to get "Ti Amo" by Laura Branigan, so here are some new lyrics.

When there's so much trouble
That you wanna cry,
The world has crumbled,
And you don't know why,
When your hopes are fading,
And they can't be found,
Dreams have left you waiting,
And friends have let you down
