I feel differently about books currently in print (and popular) than I do about something older or more obscure. Cutting up a 19c. edition, not matter now common, should be a capital offense. Cutting up a copy of Infinite Jest seems like jaywalking by comparison.

Cutting up Infinite Jest takes too long. Burning is faster.
