Dear LT:

Are we making progress on giving similarly-named authors their own author pages? I, for one, hope so, particularly where such distinctions could be made but for the lack of a means to do it.

It came up earlier today in looking at the James Kennedy author page, which apparently includes (without limitation) works by D. James Kennedy (i.e., Today's Conflict, Tomorrow's Crisis); James Ronald Kennedy (Nullifying Tyranny); and James C. Kennedy (Nieuw Babylon in aanbouw). In order to do anything with this information, however, we need a way to: (a) distinguish between "James Kennedys"; (b) re-assign works to more accurate author pages; or (c) separate and combine authors, like we do works.

I know y'all're always working on big issues and other great stuff, but this is one I've anticipated but miss almost every time I see authors distinguished.

Thanks for your thoughts!

Yes, I want this very much and have been waiting for it as well.

I see that the John Wilson page http://www.librarything.com/author/wilsonjohn&norefer=1 is up to 55 authors.

As far as I can tell from Tim-watching is that this is something he wants to do but not something he is currently working on. I don't even think it's on his list of what to tackle next.

Yeah, I think real author disambiguation is on the "Real Soon Now" list, meaning it's a long way away, if ever. It's one of my top few most-wanted, too.

That says, Jasbro, we can combine and separate authors -- just not if they are identically named. Additionally, the James Kennedys are distinguished now in the only means possible (by splitting them apart on the same page; if you see errors in the current assignment, please help fix them! I'm not familiar with any of the authors.)

Thanks to kathrynnd for her extensive work to further distinguish the James Kennedys! Now, if we had the means to separate them respectively to individual author pages, we could further combine multiple occurances of various D. James Kennedy's Today's Conflict, Tomorrow's Crisis without also attributing An oration, delivered in St. Philip's church, before the inhabitants of Charleston, South-Carolina, on the fourth of July to him. Can we do anything to help this project, or to hurry it along?

It is possible to combine occurences of a work under different author names: if you post the URLs to the works on this thread http://www.librarything.com/topic/90475 in the combiners group, someone should combine them for you.

Please please please please?? *sends feelers out for Tim*

Seriously, this has been half-done for SO long!! This is one of the (many) half-done features on LibraryThing that make me wonder why new features even come out.

I'm not trying to start another arguement, but seriously, distinct same-name authors were once a HUGE deal, something HUGELY anticipated and talked about, and now it seems like it's going to stay half-done forever.

It is a huge deal, that's exactly why it's not done yet. If it were small and easy, it would be done by now.

But even huge/hard things, after two years, should at least have some progress or ETA, right?

We're not getting any traction on this one, are we?

I think Tim commented on it briefly in the Overcat thread.

12> Thank you, MarthaJeanne. Do you mean this thread: http://www.librarything.com/topic/92646 ? If so, I'll read through it again, but I don't recall the seeing separation of same-name authors among the wide-ranging topics there. If you do come across an update, however, I would be interested to know.

I think MarthaJeanne may have thought it was on the list here

I thought I remembered him saying he was glad they had done 'this' first. But it's certainly not in that thread.

I think this is a basic necessity, although I get the feeling we won't see it happen until another "Lisa Carey" author comes along ;-)

16> Hah, that's the solution! Publish something truly abhorrent to Tim under the pseudonym Lisa Carey. :D
