Please post what you're looking for ASAP - tomorrow {7/2} is the half off sale day at my thrift shop with the cheap books, and I have a $15 budget for BM books.

I plan to leave for the thrift around 7:30am CDT, so I'll need your requests by then.

I'm looking for No Hands: The Rise and Fall of the Schwinn Bicycle Company, an American Institution by Judith Crown for my husband. He is a bike nut and just asked me to find this book. Anyone have one??

>1 dakotamidnight: Anything that says "Doctor Who" or "Torchwood" or "Sarah Jane Adventures" (or "Bernice Summerfield") will be snapped up by someone here. Especially novel-length things. Not sure where they'd be located (aside from science fiction), though the thinner books might be in children's.

If they have comic book collections, anything Gotham Central, Blue Beetle, Owly or Marvel Adventures. Marvel Adventures & Owly are child-friendly.

Um, and more specifically:
Doppelgangster and Unsympathetic Magic by Laura Resnick (adult)
The Fifth Elephant and Where's My Cow? by Terry Pratchett (adult and children's)
Superior Saturday and Lord Sunday by Garth Nix (young adult)
The Iron King by Julia Kagawa (young adult)

I wish we had a thrift as awesome as yours around here! Thank you for allowing yourself to be burdened with what will probably be a long list.

Historywitch--add me to your friends list on Bookmooch. I've posted a few Quilting books and magazines here and there but I'm about to clean out my sewing room and go through my books in the next month or two. I've got too much to fit in our new house.
I may also have some other things, such as quilt patterns, etc that I am getting rid of. I'd love to know someone who might be interested in them!
I'll go see if you have a link to your bookmooch id on your LT profile page and if so, I'll send you a friend request.

#9 What kind of clothing patterns are you looking for? I have a whole pile of mostly children's patterns, many uncut, that I've been meaning to ship off to a pattern swap kinda place.

13historywitch
Jul 4, 2010, 2:59 pm

#12 I have a five year old girl and a 9 month old boy and I make clothes for them and children of family members, so I would take any childrens patterns you have off your hands. If you have any plus size ladies patterns or patterns for men I would take those too.

Just wondering if anyone has a copy of Infinite Days by Rebecca Maizel? It was a Librarything early reviewers book last month.

15ealaindraoi
Jul 8, 2010, 7:53 pm

#14 - Actually, I expect to have two. :) I got one from the publisher and then won a copy for LTER. The LTER copy hasn't arrived yet, I don't think anyone's gotten it yet. When it arrives, I'll save that copy for you. I've already read it, just haven't put together a review yet, but I'd give it 3.5 stars.

Wow, that's two wishes in a row I've been able to grant. :) Quick, somebody wish for a pony and break my streak!

One of my local independent bookstores is having a close-out sale. It's sad to see another one go. If there is something that you are looking for, please let me know. I should be able to fulfill a few requests. The books are going pretty fast, but its hit and miss as far as the authors are going. These are brand new books, at 50% off or more, so I've been stalking the shelves. I'll be heading over Friday morning to see what I can find.

22: Could you look for mine? My list is in post 17.

I'm really hoping to get the Magic School Bus and the Lets read and find out Science titles - if it's half off new they should only run maybe $1-$3 each, maybe less even.

Hi, I'm looking for a copy of Watership Down for my niece. She's reading it as part of a summer reading program. She has to have it read by the second week in August...if anyone has a copy they can mail right away I'd greatly appreciate it! It would probably be better if someone in the US has it due to time constraints. Thank you!

>28 maeven: I've got an excellent condition mass market copy of Watership Down that I would gladly like to get rid of considering how it scarred me for life when I was but a wee thing. I don't even know why I have one; I must have inherited it along the way.

Anyhoo, I'm reserving it for you as we speak. I plan to go to the P.O. on Thurs.

#30 macbrains, did you see some sort of movie also on Watership Down? That is one of my top 5 all time favorite books but I only read it as an adult. Every one I know that read it in school as required reading shakes when they discuss it. Something is wrong with that required reading list is all I can say.

I can never pull up our drive at night and see a rabbit & not think of Fiver & Hazel.

31 & 32
Re: Watership Down - I read it when I was really really little and I became very very freaked. Disturbed by it is perhaps a better description. I may have also seen the movie, though I really can't recall. I just have images in my head, and an acute feeling of anxiety. Between Watership Down, The Velveteen Rabbit, and the Rats of NIMH....

Is there a common thread there? I remember I had a sticker book for the movie version of the Secret of NIMH and it had scratch and sniff stickers and for years whenever I smelled it I had flashes of terror. I wonder what this says about me lol.

But no, even now I will not go near these. I am not willing to rediscover why they scare me so much.

Black Beauty too -- though I was older, so it didn't disturb me quite so much.

Edited to add: Though it may partially explain why I have an overwhelming urge to protect animals and stuffed toys.

33: Don't feel bad - I'm the same way with the movie Edward Scissorhands. I saw a bit of it when I was young {maybe around 5?} and can't stand someone else doing the scissorhands to this day {I'm 25 now!}

Curiously enough, I watched The Crow the TV series at the same age - it was a favorite of mine.

Oh this should be a seperate thread like "Bothersome Books"

I am a fan of The Wizard of Oz, ametur productions and also of Wicked. My husband was greatly bothered when he was little & would not touch this story.

I have a friend who can't stand Bambi.

dakota...I can see Scissorhands being scary at age 5 when I think about it. At that tender age Johnny Depp would just not matter!!

I get a bit anxious when I see the book "Every Last One" and I read murder mysteries!

I'm a little late to the discussion but I read Watership Down when I was about 12 and loved it. It was one of my favorite books at the time and made a very strong impression on me.

42macsbrains

From the other thread it does seem that your reaction to Watership Down depends very much on how old you were when you read it, and whether may have been tainted by the movie even if you don't recall it.

I find the severe dichotomy quite fascinating.

I majored in math and used to tutor calc in my early days of college. I probably don't have anything useful still lying around, but I'll look in the old dusty boxes and see if there's something basic. No promises.
