Hi everyone! I'm Vera, relatively new to the site. I have a lot of TBRs lately, and of different subjects and genres. Currently, I'm jumping from one book to another: Notes on Nursing by Florence Nightingale and Sookie Stackhouse/Southern Vampire Stories.

What are other people in Hawaii reading?

Hi Vera, I'm Carol. I'm always juggling a few books, but have just started The Help. So far, it's keeping my interest and I haven't picked up one of the others that I need to finish. I have been busy with more visitors than usual this year (and last), which really disrupts my reading time. Not complaining, though.

Aloha Vera! I'm always reading a few at a time since I "read" audio books as well as paper ones. I'm in the middle of The Time Traveler's Wife on audio and just completed The Scarlet Pimpernel and Pamela Aiden's series on Jane Austen's Mr. Darcy (An Assembly Such As This,Duty and Desire, and These Three Remain). I've just begun The Neverending Story because I'm following a 1010 challenge (http://www.librarything.com/groups/1010challenge).

Have you read the Twilight books? Wondering how those compare with the Sookie Stackhouse ones.

Carport....How is The Help? My mom read it and loved it.

@HunyBadger- No, I've tried to watch the first movie and I did not like it at all, once he said "Say it" I turned it off. I asked my sister (who has a similar taste in entertainment as I do) if it was worth reading, and per her recommendation, I did not even dare touch the series. I'd let her read Sookie Stackhouse if she were older though. I'm assuming Sookie is more realistic (or rather, closer to legend) when it comes to vampires. Quite coincidentally, I'm also "reading" The Time Traveler's Wife on audiobook when I'm at the gym. lol.

Aloha ... just joined the site and glad to see Hawaii readers are on board. Right now I'm reading The Disappearing Spoon and a book about working with metal. Elemental, my dear. Looking forward to hearing from other readers.

Aloha, Bitershark. The Disappearing Spoon is on my wishlist, and I would like to hear what you think of it!

Hey there carport ... just finished "The Disappearing Spoon." It was kind of tough; the science is over my head, what with the protons and electrons, etc. But I enjoyed it all the same, especially the stories and personalities. King Midas' land held nickel, which with copper makes brass — much shinier than the age's dominant metal alloy, bronze. Wilhelm Rontgen's discovery of X-rays made him think he was going insane. Marie Curie named the first element that she and her husband discovered polonium, for Poland, "her nonexistent homeland." I'd recommend it. (If you'd like to borrow it, let me know; I ain't greedy.)
