Humans in a far reaching sector of space make first contact with an unknown alien race who, without provocation, attack and destroy a whole group of human ships leaving only one survivor, who is taken hostage.
While he is interrogated his father and brother(I think?) decide to recue him. As the story unfolds we learn that the leadership of the alien race has not been so truthful to it's own people. The interrogator of the human survivor especially starts having second thoughts.
I read this book about 14-15 years ago. I'm quite sure that there is a sequel to the book.

Could be Conqueror's Pride by Timothy Zahn, especially if you're sure the name is Cavanaugh.
