I've noticed quite a few cases where authors have been split, but the disambiguation box is blank. This makes it very difficult to assign any new works to the correct author. Furthermore, it's impossible to tell whether the splitter actually researched all the works properly, or whether they were just using glorified guesswork. In some cases, the splitter may still be working on the page, but I've seen a few where the split was done a year ago or more, and there's still no information.

So I'm starting this thread as a place to record author pages that need disambiguation notices. I know that when I come across them, I may not be in the humour to do the necessary research, but I'd like to be able to come back to them later. If anyone else has noticed examples, please post them here.
A couple of examples:
Patrick Robinson http://www.librarything.com/author/robinsonpatrick&norefer=1 done
Paul Robinson http://www.librarything.com/author/robinsonpaul done

edited to add:
Tony Brown http://www.librarything.com/author/browntony&norefer=1 done
Christopher Brown http://www.librarything.com/author/brownchristopher&norefer=1 done
Ian Brown http://www.librarything.com/author/brownian&norefer=1 done

I am glad you posted this. I had just tussled a little bit with Samuel Miller earlier this evening, which had had no disambiguation info, and I will go back to it to finish it.

1: Just to clarify. Librarians often use glorified guesswork when differentiating authors, so there's no particular reason why LibraryThingers shouldn't too. Just make sure it's actually glorified (spend a couple of minutes at least trying to make sure there isn't good information around to make more informed judgments). And obviously pay attention to any actual data other folks have collected and put in the disambiguation area.

Edited to fix typo

I mentioned glorified guesswork because I was a bit too enthusiastic myself when I started splitting authors, and had to correct them later. ;)

I've now fixed Tony Brown's page:
http://www.librarything.com/author/browntony&norefer=1

And I've found another to do:
Mary Brown http://www.librarything.com/author/brownmary&norefer=1

I think you need a combination expert on Sarah Hale!
Sarah Hale (2) is Sarah Josepha Buell Hale (October 24, 1788 - April 30, 1879) who has a separate entry.
The five by Sarah Hale (unknown) I think are by Sarah Elder Hale who also has a separate entry, and are part of the cobblestone history magazine.

If you need help post to combiners group : Combining/Separating (Please Fix This Book!) Request Thread #26!!!

I've been working on Samuel Seabury: http://www.librarything.com/author/seaburysamuel&norefer=1
grandfather, grandson, & great-great grandson (I think) still checking my data.

Thanks EveleenM, I like doing these. BTW I don't mind it if someone splits an author without adding the disambiguation notice, better that imo then leaving a page with multiple authors without doing anything, even if it does mean having to start all over again at the beginning.

Jane Williams is done. Someone who likes to combine works might like to have a look at the book actually by Jane A Williams at the end of the list.

I'll put in my dibs to start on Charles Elliott next.

Oh yes, it's better that they're split - I know I've sometimes forgotten I was splitting a page, and left it without the notice. This thread is just to collect any that people spot; since they've often been there a year or more, I don't think we should feel under any pressure to get them all done in a rush!

Good idea! I've done Bernard Levin and Charles March.

I recently split William Smith (link: http://www.librarything.com/author/smithwilliam&norefer=1 , with 13 separate people. There are probably some more work combination possibilities, but I ran out of steam. This is the kind of author where one absolutely needs a disambiguation notice, so that if you try to assign some of the unknown works to someone, you know to whom to assign them. I was able to find middle initials for some of the distinct authors, but I didn't try to look them up in other author pages.

Judy Collins (apart from JC #1) has me beat. But Stephen Zimmer is done. And John Marsden.

49EveleenM

The Judy Collins mess seems to be a result of Harlequin's amazing sloppiness in giving author details: half the surname-only works across LibraryThing seem to be theirs. In this case, they seem to have plumped for Judy Collins as the name for two completely different authors, Toni Collins and Colleen Collins. I've aliased the works to the correct pages, but by the numbers they're not going to leave the Judy Collins page anytime soon.
