Encountered this when I was a kid, haven't seen it since. Would love another look, to see what I might have missed. It was a quick summary of worlds from classic sci-fi, accompanied by some awe-inspiring artwork, very evocative, that really brought many of these places to life. I tracked down and read the vast majority of them soon afterwards.
Works I know were included:
- Rendezvous with Rama (this came first)
- Cities in Flight
- Dune
- Ringworld
- The Time Machine (this came last)
There were at least two others, and I'd really like to find this book so I could discover what they were. This book was an early and significant influence on my reading selections.
I thought the title was along the lines of "Fantastic Worlds" or something.

I'm not sure that this is the book you're after but it may give you a lead to the book you're looking for.
An Atlas of Fantasy by J.B.Post, Ballentine Books, ISBN 0-345-27399-0
Its basically maps of various Fantasy/Sci Fi worlds

It's not the Atlas of Fantasy, since the only place the OP mentions as definitely being included is Dune. I wonder if it might be something by one of the major SF artists like Michael Whelan or Wayne Douglas Barlowe.
When did you encounter this book? That might help pin it down.

A little google-fu picks up Alien Landscapes, which sounds similar:
"This book looks at some of the best science fiction series, such as Herbert's Dune, Clark's Rama, and Niven's Ringworld, and examines the settings and their impact on the stories. Each chapter covers a different series, and the thirty original pieces of artwork that accompanies each section is done by young artists, unnamed but never untalented!"
Sounds interesting even if wrong.
