I read this book one time in junior high. I was about 11 or 12 (so 13 to 14 years ago). I do remember it was (or is still, not sure) part of the Accelerated Reader program, grade level 5th, 6th, or 7th.
From what I remember, it starts in a classroom. The teacher has an English assignment for her class: create a character, then write a story starring it. She wants the class to pair up. She decides, in order to be fair, she'll be the one to pair the students.
Everyone doesn't like this. Only because they don't want to be paired up with *that* girl, 'cause she's "poor and wears the same old clothes".
The main character is paired up with her. At first, she's resistant. But, she soon learns how difficult this girl's life is. She has a little sister and their mother, who's a single parent, has to work multiple jobs to support her daughters.
The two girls manage to finish their story and, if I remember correctly, it turned out to be the best story in the class.
For reasons I don't know, I started thinking about this book about two years ago. I can remember the plot just fine, but not the title.
I think the word 'winter' is in the title, but I think only because the story takes place during the winter.
