The plot begins in a town where, suddenly, everyone find a physical burden on their backs overnight, in accordance with the sins they have committed. A group of townspeople decide to leave and search for a solution. (There's more, but I'd rather not spoil it unnecessarily.)
I read it easily 10 years ago. Probably a children or young adults book, and it had lovely illustrations. But it might also be an abridged version, or something, so don't take my word for it. (And if it was abridged, I'd like to read the full version.)
Maybe half A4 size, or half US paper size. Hardcover. I think. It's been 10 years since I read it, so I'm not too sure any more.
