Childrens, hardcover, probably published mid-late 1970's, had a funny looking horse-camel type animal that was losing its natural habitat to the growing industrialization of the human-like creatures. By the end there are fewer and fewer of the horse-like creatures and the world is all paved. Then the human creatures depart the platen on spacecraft. I remember the last page being a picture of the pavement cracking and a single blade of grass growing up through the crack.
