I'd like to make a complete list of the Famous Editions. Not the current set of only 10, but a complete list of any book that has ever been a Famous Edition. I don't know all of them, so if you know of a title I've left off, post if here, & I'll update the list in message #1. Thanks!

It has been disputed whether or not all of the titles in this list were actually published in the series. I believe at least 200 of them were, however. It would be interesting to determine whether any titles actually published as part of the FE collection are not on this list. I've annotated a copy of this list that I have at home -- I'll look at it when I get home tonight...

I've bolded the volumes that I know were released as Famous Editions. I've seen quite a few of the other in Easton Press editions from other sets (such as the Masterpieces of American Literature or Books that Changed the World series), but I can't say for sure if they were ever part of the Famous Editions collection.

Don't know if I saw my lovely Easton Press edition of MOBY DICK in there. The treasure of my library!

As far as I know, that book has always been a cornerstone of the 100 Greatest Books Ever Written series. I don't believe that it's ever been released in the Famous Editions series.

And I agree with you that the EP Moby Dick is a "treasure" -- for me, it was the book that started it all.

Oh, you're absolutely right about that. What indigosky is trying to do, however, is establish a list of all titles that have ever been published in this series.

The list in #3 was copied from eBay (see my link in #2 above). Because I have read claims that some of the books in the middle portion of the list (the alphabetized portion) were never actually published as Famous Editions, I was contributing my two cents towards figuring out which.

The "DISCONTINUED" labels in the list are not mine -- I'll remove them.

Unfortunately, author's names are not included in the list from eBay either (for most titles, anyway). I know who wrote all but one or two volumes, but I don't feel up to typing in 160+ names tonight (I'm sure you'll understand).

8: by "middle portion" are you referring to 132 and onward (those not highlighted)? I certainly can't vouch for all those titles, but most definitely some of those were printed as Famous Editions.

Yes - titles 132-250. Of the non-bolded entries in that range, I have seen 24 or 25 in Easton Press editions (many are from the MoAL series); I bolded entries in the list only if I've seen them advertised (by EP) as a Famous Edition, or if I've actually seen the wreath on the title page.

Regarding Idylls Of The King, you have this title listed twice. I only have it listed once. As I discovered with The Rime Of The Ancient Mariner, duplication of the same title by different illustrators and different formats is fair game for this series. My records show the Dore illustrated version was offered for sale as an individual purchase. It would not surprise me if they also sold this edition to subscribers of the 'Famous Editions' in the same way E/P frequently make titles from the 'Signed Modern Classics' available for individual purchase, only at a higher price. It's just that I have no evidence to indicate this and hope you will provide some.

Regarding Manon Lescaut, I will be floored if this is truly a verifiably published 'Famous Edition', or even a verifiably published E/P book, for that matter. I have never seen this title by Easton Press. It was an 'Heritage Press' edition, of course, but I don't think it ever made it into the Easton Press line-up. Of course, I am reluctant to correct you; you are clearly very knowledgeable about E/P, so I simply ask that you double check this and let me know on what you base this information.

Regarding, Old Creole Days, I have a copy of this book that is from the 'Masterpieces of American Literature' collection. Note that gilded-legacy-books' eBay guide does not include this title and is thus an incomplete list. (It sort of irks me that he so authoritatively states "there were a total of 38 books published for 'The Masterpieces Of American Literature' as though he knows this to be true when the truth is that his guides are only 'to the best of his knowledge'.) I can't say this title wasn't also issued for the 'Famous Editions' so I'm asking you to empower me, if you have evidence of this.

Regarding Poor Richard's Almanac, my notes include this title (unconfirmed) in the 'Masterpieces of American Literature', not in the 'Famous Editions'. (Question: Can anyone confirm this book as part of the 'Masterpieces of American Literature?) It does seem like a prime candidate for 'Famous Editions' so I will not be surprised should you confirm this one in particular. My edition happens to be from the 'Great Illustrated Classics' library.

Finally, regarding The Writings Of Thomas Jefferson, my notes include this title (unconfirmed) in the 'Masterpieces of American Literature' as The Literary Works Of Thomas Jefferson. My edition of The Writings Of Thomas Jefferson is from the 'Library Of The Presidents'. My notes also indicate that this title was included in the 'Library Of American History' and, of course, we all know it was also recently included in one of the 'Reader's Choice' collections. This book is quite the Easton Press whore, (heck, why not include it in the 'Signed First Editions of Science Fiction as well just so that collection doesn't feel left out,) so it would not surprise me if it also made it into the 'Famous Editions' series, but again, I want confirmation.

Confirmation for me, as I think you indicated earlier in this thread, means visual identification of the 'Famous Editions' wreath, either on the title page or on a 'Notes From The Archives' leaflet. An invoice would also be evidence in the event E/P got so lax as to not even include 'Notes From The Archives'. (I've learned through this blog not to put anything past them.) In the event that you can undeniably confirm any or all of these titles as 'Famous Editions', i.e. you own them, I would be grateful if you would indicate what are the cover designs, formats, illustrators, etc. that were used for each, (or better yet post photos,) so that we can see how they compare to those editions E/P issued for other collections.

Let's see -- Idylls of the King and Poor Richard's Almanac were both included in the 41-book Famous Editions list that was put out of commission earlier this year. I suppose I can refer to that instantiation of the series as FE-41, to distinguish from the recent set of ten books (FE-10??). I realize that many earlier versions of this series exist -- but I don't know how many books were in each.

Poor Richard: I have a gigantic red copy from the MoAL series, so I didn't order the FE-41 copy. There are often recent FE copies (dark blue with a picture of Ben on the cover) on the Internet, however. If my memory serves me, there was a copy for sale on eBay a couple of months back that showed the wreath on the title page.

Idylls (Dore): EP cancelled the FE-41 series before I received a copy of the Dore-illustrated Idylls. I confess to giving EP the benefit of the doubt on this one (I've seen the wreath on a FE Idylls, but it may not have been the Dore-illustrated one).

Manon Lescaut: My bad. I meant to highlight the following entry (The Travels of Marco Polo) -- what can I say, it was late at night!! Now, however, I'm having my doubts about whether I've even seen a FE copy of the Marco Polo or not. Currently, this book is part of the Books that Changed the World series. Previously wasn't it in the FE series? Or was it once in the 100G series? Or both? At different times? or the same time? Crap -- I can't remember!! At any rate, I have never seen a Manon Lescaut published by EP in any form. As I said -- my bad!

Old Creole Days: I believe you're right -- I stand corrected.

Jefferson: This is the tough one for me. I used to own a slightly-worn copy with a gray cover that I replaced with the Reader's Choice edition when I discovered that it was identical in quality. Now I wish I hadn't sold the gray one, which I am pretty sure predated its inclusion in the Library of the Presidents. On the one hand, my memory tells me (weakly) that it was wreathed; on the other, I have no recollection of the Notes From the Archives being included. It was definitely not the edition from the Library of the Presidents, however. A quick on-line search turns up no evidence about older editions of this book (and distrusting the gilded-legacy list), I can only defer to your list, O Archivist! My Archivist!

15: It's a fairly large book. Brownish leather, I believe the cover design is a castle. At some point I might snap a pic or two and share them...

I see a "Russian Folktales" ( 2683 ) on the EP website. Is this the Famous Editions volume? Does anyone know who illustrated this book?

They are also currently selling The Poems of William Blake and The Book of Job. I've wondered why these are not part of the current list of Famous Editions, but I actually like when they sell books individually. I kind of wish they would sell most of their books individually, but they tend to increase the price of individual book sales.

Thanks a lot everyone. It would certainly be nice if they would use Ivan Bilibin's illustrations. Everyman's version has his illustrations, I think. But these look nice too. :)
I wish they would include all of these books in the Famous Editions subscription in addition to offering them individually, then we wouldn't have to go hunting for them in their horrible horrible website.

I started with Famous Editions list found on Ebay. I believe this is the most accurate list and the one EP got from the Heritage Club or the Limited Editions Club. From it they formed the Collector's Library of Famous Editions (CLFE); however, they did not use all the titles. The numbers in this list correspond to the EP item numbers for the indivdual books.

I have expanded the list to include the complete titles, the authors, the translators, and the illustrators. The format is

There is another Famous Edition of Salome--illustrated by Aubrey Beardsley--that does not appear on this list. In my copy, the "special contents" are copyright 2005, so it would probably fall somewhere near the end of the list (sorry, Tom41, I don't have the item number). The book also has an introduction by Holbrook Jackson.

The end of the list has a few repeat titles with different illustrations. This is obviously one of them. Is the translator Lord Alfred Douglas? If so, then the only difference is the illustrator, since the 1973 introduction is also by Holbrook Jackson.

Did anyone who bought this from EP save the box or invoice with the item number?
