Description

This book might as well have been entitled in a more general way "Semantics of the Qur'an" but for the fact the main part of the present study is almost extensively concerned with the problem of the personal relation between God and man in the Qur'anic worldview. Coming from the pen of the first serious Asian scholar and a Japanese, this book is now available in a new improved edition.

This is an indispensable text for any serious student of Quran. Besides the fact that Izutsu produced the first Japanese translation of Quran, his in-depth command on classical Arabic and poetry is amazing. This is an original study in which he explores the key Quranic terms in history, while always keeping the basic literary structure of Quranic Weltanschauung in perspective. Izutsu establishes the outline of various dimensions of relationship between God and man, i.e., ontological, ethical and communicative, through pure literary tools of semantic fields and communities of meanings situated therein. The study can help tremendously in establishing how the classical key terms of Quran are considerably deviated (during Islam's sojourn show more into modernity) from the concepts with which these were originally associated. show less
