As volunteers clean up after a huge outdoor rock concert in Yorkshire in 1969, they discover the body of a young woman wrapped in a sleeping bag. She has been brutally murdered. The detective assigned to the case, Stanley Chadwick, is a hard-headed, strait-laced veteran of the Second World War. He could not have less in common with - or less regard for - young, disrespectful, long-haired hippies, smoking marijuana and listening to the pulsing sounds of rock and roll. But he has a murder to solve, and it looks as if the victim was somehow associated with the up-and-coming psychedelic pastoral band the Mad Hatters. In the present, Inspector Alan Banks is investigating the murder of a freelance music journalist who was working on a feature about the Mad Hatters for MOJO magazine. This is not the first time that the Mad Hatters, now aging rock superstars, have been brushed by tragedy. Banks finds he has to delve into the past to find out exactly what hornets' nest the journalist inadvertently stirred up.… (more)

This kept my interest throughout, and (for me) it was a quick read.
Two investigations, years apart. Obviously, there had to be something to tie them together, and around p200 it happened.
A story full of damaged people on both sides of the law.
Another very enjoyable DI Banks story. ( )

Two murders in two different time periods investigated by two different investigators was interesting at first. However, after reading maybe the first third of the book, the story lost its appeal for me. There were a few syntax errors I noticed. ( )

The story begins in September 1969 where a woman's body was found in a sleeping bag in the aftermath of a rock concert. It becomes apparent that the murder has a connection with Banks' current case.

This was probably the disappointment of my reading year. It was next in the series for me and as I was unable to lay my hands on a print copy I settled for audio. The story may have been a winner but was ruined by Ron Keith's atrocious narration. I wish I had skipped this one entirely and jumped to the next in the series.

Based on my previous experience with Robinson, an author I've enjoyed, I'm awarding three stars. If the rating was based on the audio reading it would be much less. ( )

Another brilliant story. It is difficult to say too much without giving away the plot but, one of the areas covered in this tale is the concept of a policeman "knowing" the perpetrator but not having the proof. As one would expect from Mr Robinson, this is done so much better than the usual bad cop twists things for a quick settlement of his case.

Were I to be churlish, the switching between a current and an historic case, in the early part of the book, became a little tedious but, in truth, when the resolution came, it was so satisfying and I can't see a better way of getting to that point so, no stars lost.

I can't wait to read the next in the series - which I have the foresight to have on standby. ( )

Inspector Banks #18. A murder case Banks and Annie are working on appears to have ties to a 1969 murder. In each case, the rock group The Mad Hatters is close to the victim. Banks victim turns out to be the illegitimate son of the 1969 victim, and he is a music journalist. Robinson weaves the two investigates together. The only jarring note is a tangent taken by new Superintendent Catherine Gervaise involving the sexual mores of Annie and a young barmaid who knew their victim. I am happy to have discovered a handful of Banks novels I had not prviously read. ( )
