Description

The novel is set in Orkney and Shetland in 1689, and for the northern isles the 'Glorious Revolution' actually means the beginning of the cultural dominance of Scotland and the advent of English power.

A facsimile copy of an early imprint, difficult to read so I bought a Kindle edition, much better for my old eyes. Tale is excellent for anyone with an interest in the Orkney Islands but a bit convoluted and the plot solution is a rather compressed at the end of the story. Gets better towards its end.
First volume was pretty boring. Second Volume was better but not good enough to bring up my rating. Any book that has Pirate in it's title needs a lot more adventure than this book brings.
"Scott's buccaneers in "The Pirate" are admirable, but they lack something human which we find here [in Treasure Island]." --Through the Magic Door, p. 264
