Description

John Wyndham's quietly menacing post-apocalyptic tales are enduringly popular, and these gripping, atmospheric radio adaptations of his classic fiction are resonant with terror and suspense.

The Triffids, Kraken and Lichen books are ones I've read before and loved, but it was a joy to re-read them as always. It turns out I'd also read some of the shorts in The Seeds of Time, but by no means all of them, and they're a nice mix of different SF perspectives. The real winners in this for me this time though were The Chrysalids and The Midwich Cookoos, which somehow I'd never got round to before. Both of which I enjoyed immensely. They're very much of their time, and perhaps a little dated, but that doesn't detract from them at all. The only thing I do notice from reading them all so close together is perhaps that a few phrases and ideas get repeated perhaps a little too often through the whole volume: particularly the famous show more Sherlock Holmes quote. In future I'll probably only dip in to read one at a time, rather than the whole volume from cover to cover. show less
