Fran Varady fell into private detective work by accident rather than design. Now she's got a 'real' job at a trendy pizzeria, she's back on track with her acting ambitions, and she's even found a nice flat to rent. But things aren't as straightforward as they seem. The job, for a start: there's something rather sinister about the way the pizzeria is run. And the play rehearsals aren't going well. As if all this doesn't bring problems enough, Fran has rashly undertaken to help a young boy, illegally in the country, find an elusive people-trafficker called Max. When the trail Fran is following is suddenly and tragically interrupted by a horrifying death, she finds herself up against dangerous men and a ruthless organisation. Fran's in big trouble this time...… (more)

Although I prefer to read mystery series in order, there are times that they just aren't available that way, so soon after reading #1 in this series I read #5. By this time the formerly homeless Fran Varady is quite a bit more settled with a home and a job. She takes on private investigator work now and then and is sometimes too observant for her own good. The problems of illegal immigration and the abuse of immigrants form the crux of this excellent book. ( )

The main character in the Fran Varady series of novels is a feisty young woman who is constantly getting herself into scrapes.
After a series of jobs which in included some detective work, she is now employed in a pizzeria. She is also trying to get into acting and is at present rehearsing for a production of an adaptation of Conan Doyle's most famous book 'The Hound of the Baskervilles'. Although this will take place for one night only in a room over a pub,she hopes for great things. As always with Fran, problems arise on several fronts when the underworld become involved with people smuggling. Also several other scams come to light and her life is threatened.
Not at all a bad read, but I would have liked more on the play itself. ( )
