Sorti en 1961, "Victim" est le premier film britannique dans lequel on utilise le terme d'homosexualité. Il fit donc grand bruit, jusqu'à avoir un rôle déterminant dans la libération des mentalités. Il faut avoir à l'esprit que les relations homosexuelles étaient considérées comme un acte criminel à l'époque victorienne (on se souvient des deux ans d'emprisonnement d'Oscar Wilde). il a fallu attendre 1967 pour que le Sexual Offences Act dépénalise les relations homosexuelles entre hommes de plus de 21 ans (en 2000, l'âge a été abaissé à 16 ans).
Un avocat londonien réputé et marié (impeccablement interprété par Dirk Bogarde) refuse de venir en aide à l'un de ses anciens amants traqués par la police, de peur du scandale. Quand il apprend, bouleversé, que le jeune homme s'est pendu dans une cellule de la police, il décide d'aider à la police en essayant de retrouver la trace de maîtres-chanteurs.
Un film très bien conduit, d'une grande valeur sociologique. ( )
