Whimsical" is a bit of an under-statement. These little bits are almost bizarre. I was going to give it three stars, but then I saw the description here on GR that points out the common gimmick of the stories, about the fact that each story begins with a metaphorical idiom. The light-bulb that went off in my head prompted the fourth star.

Fans of Ahlberg's Gaskitt series, and folks who love wordplay, and young readers who like a dash of fantasy sans fairies, will get a kick out of these. Very quick read for an adult (I've read picture-books from the toddler section of the library that are longer than this so-called chapter book) so borrow before buying." ( )

Stories that play with expressions, e.g., "The Clothes Horse", "Life Savings", "The Jack Pot", "No Man's Land", "The Night Train", and "God Knows".

Opening line of "Life Savings": 'There was once a woman who decided to save parts of her life till later, when she might have more need of them.' ( )
