Admiring more and more the rock-solid craft that goes into these, from the handling of the plotting-for-the-novel-and-for-the-series, to the characterisation, the just-enough-detail worldbuilding, the carefully constructed epic action scenes. This volume has the contrasting highlights of opening with a huge dragon versus a dwarf airship, and a pleasingly prickly and difficult adult relationship developing between two people in uncertain circumstances who aren't always their best selves towards each other. Also, every time the Skaven are onstage there's invariably a reference to their fear musk-glands, which feels like a reference to a billionaire currently spraying his glands all over a social media platform.
Gotrek and Felix return from their battles in the Chaos Wastes in book 3 to find more trouble. A dragon has awoken from a thousand year old slumber to terrorize settlements near where they return to, as well as armies of chaos are on the march to their location. Gotrek continues on his quest for a glorious death by seeking out the dragon with the help of Felix (reluctantly) and other human and dwarf companions. Along the way, Felix struggles with his own decision making, as well as his feelings for an attractive human female who fights along with the group. This novel is as enjoyable to read as the previous 3, and King has created very strong and identifiable characters to follow along with on their trials.
Book four of the Gotrek and Felix series finds the boys coming back from the chaos wastes where they fought a demon, reclaimed a Dwarven artifact and saved some survivors from the over run Dwarven city of Karag Dum. They need to warn the empire of the encroaching chaos army so they head off with a new war party in their airship to visit various leaders and make ready for war, when a dragon attacks them. The Airship is forced to land at the Dwarven city of the slayer King. The air ship is repaired and the boys form a party to go and fight the dragon. Good times are had by all and by the end the boys are off again to prepare to fight the chaos hordes.
I didn't enjoy as much as the prior novels, really felt like it dragged on in comparison
Solid Slayer adventure this time out.
