I've read more entertaining grammar books, but this one is a really solid guide. I like the pop quizzes throughout the book and the quick tips section. I love the "Your Right to Write" chapter that teaches the difference between correct writing and good writing.
As stated earlier in my review of Fogarty's "Quick and Dirty," Fogarty takes grammatical issues and frames them within the context of writing. If students are ever going to remember some of the more crucial grammar rules (like where to put commas), they have to see a connection between those rules (guidelines, really) and their own writing. Grammar workbooks are (or should be) things of the past; grammar guides for students nowadays should look like Forgarty's. She takes common grammatical issues, talks (not lectures) about why it is important for a writer to know about the issue, and then provides help for student writers.

I am considering adopting this book as the official "grammar workbook" next year. This would give each student a show more copy to refer to throughout the year, and I can direct them to appropriate chapters based on issues I see within their writing. show less
