Description
Excerpt from The Bible Gallery: Illustratd by Gustave Dor , With Memoir of Dor and Descriptive Letter-Press The sad truth set forth in the preceding page is here illustrated in the most striking way. Alienation from God is always followed 'by mutual estrangement. According to the record given in Genesis, when the two brothers, Cain and Abel, appeared before the Lord for worship, the latter was accepted, the former one coming as a sinner with a bloody sacrifice, which pointed to the great show more truth of expiation, the other with an u-nbloody offering, which contained no suggestion of unworthiness or the need of pardon. Cain became angry at his ill-a success, and even the gracious expostulation of his Maker made no impression upon his mind. On the contrary, he went from bad to worse. Envy led to hatred, and hatred to obduracy before God, and the issue was the shedding of a brother's blood. Cain rose up against Abel his brother and slew him. We are ndt left in doubt as to the origin of this fratricide. The Apostle John in his First Epistle (iii. 12) says: Cain Was of the wicked one, and slew his brother. And wherefore slew he him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother's righteous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This is a "greatest hits" of Dore's Bible illustrations, featuring 100 of the most popular ones, each with a facing page of text explaining the scene he is illustrating. This is a mass-produce book and the print quality reflects that.
This beautiful old book has a large number (100) of Doré illustrations from his bible, and a narrative for each by Doctor of Divinity, Talbot W. Chambers. This book should not be confused with the Doré bible, with illustrations by him. Very good condition for a book this old, and with a nice memoir of Doré written by Chambers.
100 full page illustrations from the Bible. This copy very good plus minor scuffing and soiling to boards. Cover color plate very good. ($100)

A decade later, he illustrated a French edition of Cervantes's Don Quixote, and his depictions of the knight and his squire, Sancho Panza, have become so famous that they have influenced subsequent readers, artists, and stage and film directors' ideas of the physical "look" of the two characters. He continued to illustrate books until his death in Paris following a short illness. The city's Père Lachaise Cemetery contains his grave. (Bowker Author Biography) show less
