Thomas Craven (1) (1888–1969)

Indispensable coffee table book for the artistically impaired (like me). A compendium of western art with fabulous reproductions of famous paintings from the Renaissance to the present day, and their accompanying short critiques, often with biographical information on the artist. A short course in Art Appreciation for those of us who, for one reason or another, aren't able to travel to see the actual works.

Decent book if you want an over-view of art history. What I didn't like was that most of the prints were small and in black and white.

This is a fantastic book - great history of cartooning, and wonderful political cartoons. The cartoons included in this large volume serve as an excellent first-hand view of life in the first half of the 20th century. Text is well-researched and readable - cartoons are plentiful, of an interesting variety and styles, and very funny.

A selection of one hundred etchings and lithographs by the foremost living (at the time) American artists. A beautiful and annotated collection of one of my favorite art forms. Includes art by Thomas Benton, Paul Cadmus, John Steuart Curry, Edward Hopper, John Sloan and Grant Wood.
