Description

Michel Foucault's work has profoundly affected the teaching of such diverse disciplines as literary criticism, criminology, and gender studies. Arguing that definitions of abnormal behavior are culturally constructed, Foucault explored the unfair division between those who meet and those who deviate from social norms. Foucault's deeply visual sense of scenes such as ritual public executions, lends itself well to Moshe Süsser's dramatic illustrations.

A quick and basically competent run-down of Foucault's career and main works marred considerably by the intrusive feminism of the author who seems to have missed the point that Foucault was making about ideology.

It is now rather old and so out-dated. There is always the Wikipedia entry and there are better guides but it might be a useful starter pack for some students.
As one who admits to finding Foucault difficult and dense, this books affords me a gentler means of approaching Foucault's work. No doubt scholars of Foucault would consider this overly simple. It may very well be that fine points and nuances are sacrificed in the effort to condense and reach the masses. Nevertheless, those fine points and nuances would still be missed without a guide such as this since the works are well nigh inaccessible. By no means should this be a substitute for reading the originals / translations. But as an introduction, this book serves a vital purpose.
An unusual yet interesting introduction to Foucault.
The pictures are clever, but frankly I could get the same level of information from a wikipedia article.
