Don't Need Friends is a great story about how children might feel when their friends move away. Rat feels lonely when his friend leaves but he does not want any friends unless it is Possum. It reminded me of during Katrina when all of my friends where in different places, and I did not want to make new friends where we were living. It shows children that is it okay to make new friends and still miss your old ones.
With the number of students I have had move in and out this year, this would have been such a nice book to share. Rat and Possum are best friends at the dump until Possum moves to another junkyard. After a while, a big, dirty dog moves in. Rat and Dog argue and avoid each other. Finally, a foot-long sandwich brings them together and after so many "Don't need friends" grumblings, they end up becoming a little more neighborly. By the end of the story, they realize they do need a friend and finally give in to that companionship. It's a nice story about finding new friends and teaching a lesson about opening up to friends instead of closing yourself off to people.
K-4. Great to read to students when talking about being kind and caring because you never know what may happen to someone. Rat's friend Possum moves away and Rat's way of coping with that is to push people away rather than moving on to become closer to his friends. Rat pushes away Hound and they have a love-hate relationship with one another. Hound, one day, gets sick and Rat tries not to show his concern although he is really worried about him.
Being Stubborn, a mouse helps a dog after what seems as a tumultuous relationship. It shows just how important friends are, and how without them, we really won't survive.
I like this story alot. I think it shows that friends are there for you when you really need them. It also show that you can find new friends just about anywhere
