Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale, by Marcus Pfister. I picked this book thinking it was the original, after reading a page I realize is one of the many rainbow fish books. In the end it's ok because this book had a great message to share just like the original had, violence is not the solution. A message that many children should learn and many adults. My favorite part of this book was how the author brought all the old fish from the original book to this one. Rainbow fish kept his friends and they are growing and learning together just like a group of students. This is a nice touch to the group of books and I feel it gives a good background story. Another part of this book I enjoyed was the pictures. Mostly because they brought back show more memories, but also because they show huge amounts of emotion from fish and the whale. The images allow for a child to look and see how the animal feels before they read, giving great opportunity for reading with expression. The last part I enjoyed was the push topic, I felt this book touched on bullying and making fun of people. Which is something a lot of teachers don't like to talk about but need to. More books with push topics should be read in classes to inform our students, instead of hiding them from the 'real' world for as long as possible. show less
Like all other books in the Rainbow Fish collection, this one is a wonderful book that can relate to the theme of judging people before getting to know them. Through a cute story, children can learn the importance of getting to know people who are different from them. I believe this book should be incorporated into all younger level children's classrooms.
Genre: Fantasy
Media: ink and wash, glitter?
This book is about a school of fish who live happily with as much food as they can eat. A whale comes along, and eats food, but one day the fish decided they whale wants to eat them as well. The whale gets angry at these accusations, and scares the fish. In the end, one brave fish decides to solve their conflict. This book does a great job of showing that sometimes false assumptions are made, that can really hurt feelings. Also, the way to solve conflict is by talking about it, not hiding from it. I would definitely use this book if my class was having problems with resolving conflict, or speeding rumors. I was not a big fan of the illustrations, but I definitely like the story line, and would show more use this in my classroom. show less

This book is an all time favorite amongst the younger children. It teaches them a lesson that hurtful words can affect a friendship and it is never okay to judge a book by its cover. It teaches friendship and that size does not matter.
Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale is a great book because it really brings children in and they want to listen to it. The colors of this book make them focus more and the story line is creative and fun too.
This book is a good sequal to the original rainbow fish. It teaches young students about the harm in fighting and how it's better to settle things and be friends.
