Gosh, I love his books. Inexpensive, short, and they make no pretense of "moralizing" or "educating" at all - no Aesops, no phonics, none of that, just good old-fashioned storytelling.

Tina needs new socks. (Note - given that this book is dedicated to a Tina who lives on Hay River Dene Reserve, I'm going to assume that, like that Tina, the Tina in this book is probably First Nations as well, and in this world of picture books it's always nice to see some diversity.) And not boring black socks - AWESOME SOCKS.

So she asks her mother to take her to the shop store, but the bridge is a long way away and, uh, no. So she asks her grandfather and rows there. (With maybe a little help.) And hey - awesome rainbow socks! She's never gonna take show more them off! (Do you know a kid like that? One favorite shirt and god help you if you suggest that maybe it might survive a trip through the washer? Yeah, this is something like that.)

Her mother is very understanding, even when birds are literally falling out of the sky around her (Martchenko's illustrations, as always, are top notch and this book is worth getting for those alone), but her friends are less so and go scrub her socks in the river. (Even down the river, people, we're told, asked "Why does it smell like dirty socks?") And she learns a valuable lesson - "If I wait long enough, other people will wash my clothes for me." (The closing illustrations indicates she unlearned this lesson the hard way. Sure hope she can swim!)

It's super funny, very exaggerated and over the top, great to read. You're bound to have a lot of fun with it :)

I love this story about a girl who desperately wants socks and finally goes to the store and gets rainbow colored ones she loves so much she refuses to wash them! they end up stinking so bad her classmates throw her in the lake and wash them themselves! and even her shirt later! it is great for having a good laugh and teaching kids proper hygiene and how we don't want to be the stinky kid in class
Smelly Socks is a book about a girl that gets a pair of socks that she love so much that she never wants to take them off. After a while her socks become extremely smelly and start to bother her classmates. Her classmates take it upon themselves to wash her feet and the socks themselves. This was a very good book because it was one that can teach children a lesson about hygiene. It is common that some children find an outfit or some part of clothing that they like really like and they grow accustomed to wearing it that they don't want to take it off. Like the young girl in the book it helps them to realize that when the item is clean that it is still the same or maybe even better. I like this book because it was not only teaching a show more message, it had funny aspects to it as well. For instance, there was a part that talked about her socks being so smelly that a skunk was disturbed by them. This creates irony, which is a good term for children to learn. Children would find it funny that a skunk is suppose to be the smelly one. show less
Tina needs socks, but all she will get is a pair of black socks in her town. So, she must go far away across a river to get a funky one. But, her mom refuses to take her, so she cajoles her grandpa to take her by boat. And the fun begins. Long-winded rowing back and forth gets her a pair of socks that she LOVES! She loves it so much that she refuses to take it off; what happens afterwards is hilarious.
We love PBs. We hear you; we don't have to repeat it every time. But did we say that we LOVE silly and humorous PBs more than the others? This book will make you laugh every time you read it. We all know at least one Tina in our life, and we laugh even more when we think of our Tinas. The illustrations are perfect for the story - they show more make you giggle even more.

This was a good book about not caring what other people think. This also brings up the important conversation that i'm sure i'll have to have with my students about cleanliness. I'm all for people enjoying what they wear but they have to take into account how they smell sometimes.
This book is about a girl who finds a pair of socks that she loves so much, she doesn't want to take them off. Her friends and classmates get fed up with the smell, dump her in a pond, and scrub her socks clean. I would read this to kids 1-6 grades. I feel that it teaches a little about the importance of hygiene. The illustrations were nice to look at and did a great job of going along with the story.
This is a story about a girl who loves her socks so much that she does not want to take them off. Younger readers would like this story because it is silly. When her friends notice the smelly socks they make a plan to get her out of her smelly socks.
