Description
The Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot, the Abominable Snowman--these are the names of the elusive beasts that have caught the eye and captured the imaginations of people around the world for centuries. Recently, these "monsters" have experienced an increase in sightings, and out of these legends a new science has been born: cryptozoology--the study of hidden animals. This book, the first encyclopedia of its kind, contains nearly 200 entries, including cryptids (the name given to these unusual show more beasts), new animal finds, and the explorers and scientists who search for them. --From publisher description. show lessTags

This is not so much an encyclopedia of cryptids (the mysterious and charismatic creatures which may or may not exist) as an encyclopedia of the art and community of cryptozoology itself. Oh, there are plenty of entries on cryptids, and they are fairly good (if not as in-depth as one might hope) but there are just as many entries for cryptozoologists, organizations, terminology, and recently-discovered animals that were never cryptids. So a good encyclopedia if you're interested in cryptozoology as a culture, but not so much if it's just the interesting creatures themselves that you want to know about - I wouldn't recommend this to someone with a casual interest, and someone with a more-than-casual interest probably has better sources show more for the cryptid entries. show less
A very good, informative book listing many cryptozoological wonders, mysteries, and hoxes.
Not worth the money I paid! Repeat data that I could have found on the web - bummber!
