Once again, Donald Crews takes something from everyday life (flying), but, adds a sprinkle of wonder through his illustrations, and it feels like an adventure. Mr. Crews uses a simplistic drawing style, but through lines and bright colors to grab the attention, the book keeps the attention and brings the reader and anyone listening on the journey with him. I read this book to one of the kids I babysit as his "book before bed" and he loved it.
Donald Crews took a mode of transportation and turned it into a fun story. He goes through the steps of flying like boarding and taxiing to the runway. Then he talks about the different types of areas you fly over such as mountains or cities. I think kids would really enjoy this book because if they have never been on a plane before they get to see what it would be like and for kids that have been on a plane it would be fun to guess to see whats next.
Flying by Donald Crews is one of his transportation children’s such as Truck, Harbor, and School Bus. In this book, the author innovates a very easy to follow text that can help introduce and explain the flight’s steps to young children. The first step is boarding the plane, then taxi to the runway, ready? The airplane then will take off; fly over the airport, and then highways, rivers, and cities. The plan will go farther to across the country and over mountains. It will also fly into and over the cloud. Finally, at night the plan comes down, down, down, lands, and passengers come out. The book has a large font and comforting repetition which makes it perfect for preschool age. The illustrator neatly uses gouache paints and an show more airbrush to draw wonderful pictures. The illustration shows enough detail to introduce the basics of flight. This book can be an excellent choice for a read aloud and have the opportunities to discuss different things such as airplanes, or travel. Moreover, children can learn some new vocabulary that they may not know before, such as "boarding" and "taxiing. show less
This book that takes young readers on a trip aboard a propeller-driven airplane. With minimal text and bright-color illustrations, Crews captures the essence of a plane journey. The book follows the plane from boarding at the airport to ascending above the city, flying through the clouds, and finally landing at another city at nightfall.
"Flying" by Donald Crews is a simple story that follows an airplane from take-off to landing. It is a good story to read to very young children because there are minimal words and lots of interesting and thought provoking illustrations.
Explores transportation yet again in another lovely fashion. Donald Crews portrays the different mechanics of flight and all that goes into a trip on an airplane, without displaying a particular destination. This book is, I believe, intended for 3-4 year olds.

This book is great for smaller children who may be scared or nervous to go on their first flight. It describes how a plane takes off, flies, and lands in simple steps where a child can understand.
